Guest guest
PS 100 (chocolate), Whey Stack (chocolate), Protien Delite (chocolate, vanilla berry or raspberry) and Pro V 60 (vanilla or chocolate). These all taste very good. However since I have begun testing my blood sugar, I notice that the Protein Delite tends to elevate my blood sugar. There was someone on another list that was saying that PD was mislabeled somewhat and I do now wonder if their is some validity to that, but I dunno. ~Kricket RNY 11-13-02 298/140 > Tina, > I like proscore 100 chocolate the most. > > The others I like are: proscore 100 vanilla, chocolate whey stack, banana > whey stack, sci fit peach whey > > > Sherra

Do you have a favorite? I can do > nearly any flavor but bananna. Here are my favorites, in order of MY preference (but remember this is me, and I'll eat head cheese): CHampion Pure Whey Stack: Favorite is Cocoa Mochaccino, 2nd is Banana (but we already know you're not going there! LOL) Most folks I know SWEAR by the Stack Chocolate -- I like it, but I like the coffee flavor better. 3rd in line for me is the Stack vanilla, because it mixes with anything else -- diet root beer, SF Tang, flavored syrups, etc. I also really like the Sci Fit Whey line. They have a ton of flavors, and I haven't found one yet that I didn't like at least a little. My faves are the Coconut Cream and the Cookies & Cream (which has little bits of oreo-like cookie in it) I LOVE LOVE LOVE Nectar Caribbean Cooler -- but it's more of a treat. It's got a pina colada flavor, more or less. They also make a cherry berry that is pretty good, and a strawberry kiwi that a lot of people think is great (I'm not huge on strawberry myself). Best bet is to order samples. Vitalady sells 'em for around $2 each, and you can try any brand, any flavor to see if you like it. I got a bunch of different chocolate and vanilla ones when I started, and took notes on what I though of each one, and made my purchases from there. Good luck! And drink LOTS of protein -- it's good for ya! ~ ~Lyn G

Guest guest
> Huh? bioavailable? what does that mean? and why is whey protein so much > better? You couldn't pay me to gag down any of those powdered shakes. I tried > them early on -- no thanks. It means your body can make good use of it, use the protein as the building blocks of skin, blood, bone, hair, little things that most of us would like to keep giving nutrients to for the foreseeable future. There are some kinds of protein (like meat) that are harder for the post-RNY body to break down into usable bits. There are other kinds (like casseinate), that we can break down a little better, but still not enough. Then there is whey protein, which contains the complete amino acid chains that the body needs, already broken down for us so that the little digestive system still functioning can function at peak performance to give us as much protein as possible. The best explanation of the why's and how's of protein supplements that I have seen is at http://www.vitalady.com/why_protein.htm And please, you don't have to buy your protein from Vitalady, though you'd be wise if you did (and no, I don't work there, but I did for a time, and I was a loyal customer both before and after my employment there). You can buy it anywhere, but you need it. Now if you go into the protein question with the attitude of I WON " T LIKE IT, then there is probably nothing I can say to convince you. So, if you're ever on heart medication and don't like it, will you stop taking it? If you're diabetic, will you refuse insulin? If you have a curable infection, will you refuse all medication because " we couldn't pay you to gag it down? " You have to look at supplementation that way. You can decide to supply your body what it needs, or not. It's your health. It's your choice. But if you want to do Atkins shakes and such, hey, go for it, and hope that your body can drag all it needs out of those. You'll probably need 6 or 7 a day to break even, but if you'll drink them, fine. Me, I choose to use what my body asks for. I went the way of not liking the shakes, and until I tried something I liked and would drink, I filled up on other things. I'm sitting here 60 pounds heavier than my lowest post-op weight from that kind of thinking. I wish I'd known at 200 what I know at 260 -- maybe I could have gotten down to goal some day. ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
The short answer to what bio means: " Bioavailability protein's bioavailability is a measure of how much of what's eaten can actually be absorbed and used. " Sorta doesn't do you good if it isn't being absorbed very well. Because our digestion is messed around with and some of us have an actual Bypass that is meant to malnourish calories, it only stands to reason we want the most " bang for our buck " so to speak when it comes to protein. I only have so much room in my pouch during the day. I want it to be absorbing the most it can. The most bioavailable protein out there is Pure whey. Studies have been done and the info is out there so you do not have to take my word for it. The body building world has known this for YEARS so this isn't a new revelation. Whey has so many good properties to it, builds immune systems up, less work for your liver, etc. Maybe you didn't find the right one? I do not gag . I refuse to take one that I actually gag on. But I did open my mind to maybe something not tasting like a chocolate milk shake. I also noticed the less sugar I put in my diet, the more the shake tasted better. I kept at it till I found some that worked for me because I was determined not to go back to that hospital again. I could only take so many of the incompetent nurses sticking me with an IV that could never find a vein till I finally said ENOUGH. My husband who is the most picky person concerning food and tastes I've ever met....found a pure whey shake he could down with not much trouble...shocked the heck out of me. Of course we had to try over 30 samples LOL. I'm not out to convince anyone if they are against it that they should take these shakes. I am, however, into sharing my story of being in and out of the hospital eating 'regular' food only and not feeling good and that the shakes turned me a 180 from that situation. I had to hit rock bottom and be in the hospital several times due to malnutrition and issues using REGULAR food as my only source. I decided to listen to folks who have been there done that and bought tshirts and once I followed what they said, it was amazing how I began to feel. If you feel you are doing fine and everything is going dandy with what you are doing...great...who knows..maybe you'd do much better if you did use them? I have a feeling that isn't the norm with others and is why I counsel new ops and people having problems, to give the pure whey shakes a try. There are plenty of RNY folks out there that are thin but sickly or not doing very well. I believe this is a major reason why because they look at me with a stupor of... " i need protein " " i need vitamins " ? I get so tired of people saying, I wouldn't do a bypass operation because they are always so sickly looking and lose tons of muscle mass. I'm like what? look at me....I'm not sickly looking anymore like I used to be before shakes and my muscle mass is just fine because I get my protein in. I'm very healthy looking and my complextion is so nice for once. Guest guest
I too found the shakes gag-alicious for quite some time postop. Mt. Sinai encouraged the shakes so initially, I got a bunch of samples and found JUST one that I was able to keep down and used it for about 9 months postop, then I stopped using it. Recently I ventured back into shake-dom and found a couple that I (miraculously) found GOOD tasting. The really weird thing is that I am unable to stomach the only one I had been able to keep down before! Convoluted way of saying: if you wanna go the way of the shake but had trouble previously, retry with an open mind and willing palate & you might be surprised just how much your tastebuds have changed over time. What was nauseating once may not be nauseating still. And yet still more, I've gotta tell you, those shakes don't fill me up the way real food does. So I can't have one for breakfast (like I did when I was using them initially) and go about my merry way cause I'm gonna be hungry like an hour later. When I take one now it's not as a meal replacement but rather more like a supplement or in-between thingy. I assume this is how many of you shakefolk use them?????? Guest guest
Lucille, For the most part I use Proscore 100 chocolate and really haven't been using any others so I don't have the experience you do in using different ones to see if they act as a meal replacement either. I just got some samples and tried them and see I can get 4 others down so I'm going to try those on a more largescale basis. On the one that I use alot, it keeps me full as a regular meal replacement, for about 3 hours. I have no idea if the other 4 will. I use them in both instances as a meal or in between meals, just depends on what I fancy eating for the day. Usually if it's my meal, I have begun to add in veggies to eat about 15 mins after and I mix in some flax seed meal for my fats to just round it out. I try to eat the " rounded out " meal within 30 mins so it gets processed as a meal instead of like grazing. I'm a proximal so the distals may use theirs differently. If you know with a certain supplement that you are going to be hungry an hour out, it might be a good idea (after you are sure it's really a good solid supplement to take) to round it out with some good carbs and fats if it is just pure protein that is. You are on the nose about your advice on that our tastebuds change. Mine have changed several times over the 2 yrs. Guest guest
Just saw this today. I'm 5'2 " My " goal " was between 115 and 125 but I just kept losing and at 104 I have gotten back into my size 8-10's from years ago. In today's market I'm a size 2-4. Feel really good and love being able to move my little body to do all sorts of fun things. Can run a mile without even breathing hard. Have not had any bounce back but like I said I'm careful and was not a junk food junkie prior to WLS. Probably a binge eater from years of dieting - just get so darn hungry would overeat. Now I eat, eat eat but little amounts and the right things. I love food now, hated it before WLS.
