Guest guest
Hi , A while back I mentioned that I had a facelift about a year ago. I hadn't thought about disclosing that here on this board, but it was appropriate at the time to help someone with a part of their recovery that it was relevant to. I am mentioning it again here only because it might also relate for you now. I had really saggy baggy skin before the facelift. I mean, my jowls were really hound-dog like, and my chin(s) were really saggy. My plastic surgeon fixed that wonderfully, but his comment about the reason I had so prematurely sagged to that unusual extent was the very first indication I had that there was something unusual about my jaw. He said that the sagging would continue to develop for me as I continue to age due to a complex problem I have with my jaw. I had no clue until that comment that I had anything unusual about my jaw!!! A related comment by my new dentist a few weeks later was what got the ball rolling on this whole braces/orthognathic process for me. Because I had already gone through the facelift ordeal (it isn't bad btw, but it has the MAJOR swelling issues and recovering numbness issues that many have here as well), I wanted to make sure with my OS that this jaw surgery would not UNDO the current facelift or make a new one necessary. Facelifts are spendy! lol And the thought of having those majorly hanging jowls/chins again, was really upsetting to me. I mean, they were really extreme even for someone who at the time was 51 years old. But the OS said that the surgery will actually improve the facelift and diminish the way that I had prematurely aged in the first place. That is why I am wanting to share this with you. The wrinkles that you currently see diminished may not be due to the swelling so much as the movement of your jaw. I am thinking you might see improvement remain as you progress through the recovery and your skin adjusts to the new placement and positioning of the bones and tissues. It would be a good question for your OS. This is the way the OS explined it to me. With my lower jaw currently receded and the maxillary hypoplasia so evident, it created the conditions that led to the premature sagging of the tissues in the first place. There was no structure below the skin to support it if you see what I mean, and so it was allowed to sag and hang. By moving the maxilla downward, forward and more contoured, there will be more surface for the current skin I have to be filled out by the bone/tissue below that is moved forward. So less nasolabial folding. And with the lower jaw moved forward/down/rotated, the jowling tissue will also have more area that is filled in. So this should improve the condition of the sagging, and actually give support - so that as I continue to age, the same " melting " of skin and tissues will not be as dramatic. So the reduction in wrinkles you are experiencing may not be just due to the swelling if you see what I mean. It may be also due to the change in dynamics of the way your skin is draped over the underlying structures. Having the lower moved forward might, if the same is true for you as I am thinking, actually improve the way your skin appears too. It is strethched forward over the underlying structure, and this may minimize the appearance of the skin being wrinkled. It would be a good question for your OS actually. I was amazed when my OS told me that. I had been concerned about not undoing the facelift, but when he told me that the new support and more beneficial support of my underlying structure would even improve the lift, I was even more sold on the surgery!!! lol I had already decided to go for it, but that was definately icing on the cake so to speak. I am anxious to hear how this progresses for you as the swelling subsides. It may be a benefit to you that you hadn't even counted on. I am hoping that for you! Guest guest
Hi Fran & anyone else interested - I seem to have more of a 'double chin' since my surgery, sort of underneath my chin ... I'm hoping that this is swelling, and not as a result. I noticed it and so did my Mom. I hope what you say is true, I was wondering if the pushing forward of the jaw brough the skin forward too...?? Anyone else have this? Guest guest
Hi Pam, I am preop to the jaw surgery, but I would think that if you didn't have one before surgery, it is probably just swelling. I had that with a former facial surgery, and it did resolve. It seems to be an area that tends to swell easily. I used to get it even when I had some crown work done on my lower molars. Let us know how that progresses. Guest guest
I had my top jaw moved forward two weeks ago. The majority of my swelling is gone except for under my chin. It looks like I have a double chin. I hope it goes away. Your not the only one with this problem. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My teeth feel sensitive to the point > where > > > > they > > > > > > > hurt - > > > > > > > > > did > > > > > > > > > > > > > anyone > > > > > > > > > > > > > > else > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > have this during their recovery?
