Guest guest
sabrina, i wouldn't worry too much. my surgeon also said the plates and screws would be in for life (and much longer than that)...i think his exact words were " if they dug up your body 10,000 years from now, you're plates and screws would still be there. " well gee, thanks! i think the only time they need to be removed is if there is an infection or if your body starts rejecting them. but i think these incidences are pretty rare.... -becky \
Guest guest
Hey, My doctor told me that my screws/plates will be in for life. I am not too worried about it though...my boss had this surgery and still has hers in and she doesn't seem to have a problem. Guest guest
Hi, I was told that unless the plates/screws get infected or become a problem then they will stay in for life. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Mine are in for life too! 4 plates, 6-8 screws per plate (I don't know the total yet). I thought this would bother me a little, but it was a few days after surgery until I had a realization that, oh yeah, I have screws and plates in my head! I'm not bothered by it at all now that I'm post op, though I thought I would be before. It's weird. And I TOTALLY agree with you on the waterpik! Last night I was thinking about how much I am in love with my waterpik and how I would be lost without it. Guest guest
Hi , Mine is in for life also. I'm not too worried about it. They are titanium screws and you should not feel them after awhile. I'm 4 weeks post-op. Also, what kind of waterpik do you have? I bought one from Wal-Mart and had to take it back when I was 2 weeks post-op. The pressure was too hard for my mouth then. I need a really good one where there's different pressure levels. I tried using it and the water sprayed all over my sink. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Kay > Hi everyone, > > I was just wondering if anyone here will have plates and screw in for > life. Guest guest
Hi Fay, I live in Australia and bought my waterpik from a pharmacy. But it comes from the US and has many levels of pressure so there should be similar available for you. Sorry I am not much help. . > > Hi everyone, > > > > I was just wondering if anyone here will have plates and screw in > for > > life. Guest guest
Hi Austria! I think that Waterpik is the brand name. I just got a base model (about $50 Canadian). I didn't go for all the fancy features. I also use a sonicare ultrasonic toothbrush, Dental tape instead of regular floss, and a proxabrush for between my brackets. Yes, I am a little obsessive. oh well. Fay > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > > > I was just wondering if anyone here will have > > plates and screw > > in > > > > for > > > > > life. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info! I will have to go out and get one before my surgery. Thanks! Guest guest
, I have my screws and plates in for life. As long as they don't start acting up I am fine with that. Think of it as if you had broken your arm or leg and needed to get a screw or metal plate put in to make sure the bone held together properly. Many people get this done every year and sometimes they get the screws/plates out and sometimes they don't. A very small proportion of people have to have them removed for one reason or another. I would discuss this possibility with your surgeon if you're worried about it. As for the waterpik i agree, it's a great tool on any day but i might add that people should first check with their doctor that it's ok to use one after surgery. My OMS requested that I not use one for at least the first 3 weeks post-op because of all the stitches i had in mouth - the strong jet of water from the waterpik can sometimes cause the stitches to come out sooner than they should. Guest guest
, I was a bit freaked out about screws being in forever and possibly plates, although we've always joked I have a metal plate in my head. But now after surgery, it doesn't really bother me. I saw the x-rays and they were so tiny, I thought, oh well. Hope that happens with you.
