A 2:1 ratio conserver isn't adequate though. There are 5:1 and 6:1

conservers readily available so don't let her limit you unnecessarily.

There are many great conservers out there. Funny, I was talking to my

oxygen driver yesterday and we talked about conservers and the ones they

would switch people who were having trouble to.

company. She is the gal who was originally supposed to come the first

time. She tested me on a conserver with a 2/1 ration and my sats didn't

budge from 96/97, even going up & down stairs. I am so delighted. She

also told me that the company will give us (no charge), the use of

equipment to take on vacation. My hubby is so pleased.

I did fantastically well on the 2:1 ratio conserver. She wasn't trying to limit me, just trying different ratios for my needs. She was very good. My sat level didn't move from 96 through the whole test, even going up and down the stairs. I just used it to swiffer my upstairs and I only went down to 94, and there were times I know I was holding my breath. When I came back downstairs and shut it off, I was at 93.----- "Bruce" wrote:

With my D tank, the oxygen will now last me 8 hours. With my M tank it will last me 3 hours.----- "Arianne" wrote:

Ann,

I'm so happy that you know a conserver will work for you. That is indeed wonderful news. The increase in time you'll get out of your tanks will amaze you.

If the time comes that you find the 2:1 conserver isn't working for you at least you know now that's 4:1 and 5:1's exist and you can request them.

So happy for you!

Thank you Beth. This conserver will certainly add hours to a tank. My M tank will now last me a whole week at the gym, or take me on an errand or two afterward.----- " Beth" wrote:

Joyce,

A conserver is a small device that attaches to the top of a metal oxygen canister or tank. It delivers a bolus of oxygen through the tubing every time you inhale.

It is different from a continuous flow regulator which also attaches to the top of the tank but delivers oxygen through the tubing continuously whether you are inhaling or exhaling.

A conserver serves the same purpose as the pulse settings on a liquid portable. It delivers oxygen to you only when you inhale.

Hope that helps! How are you feeling these days?

This is an odd question....anybody know what the criteria is for a doctor in

deciding whether to put someone on continuous or pulse with their O2??

Take care, hoping everyone has an easy evening.

In my experience the doctor rarely decides. In general, if pulse or

demand work for you satisfactorily, then they are fine to use. If they

don't work, then continuous is required. Always, continuous is required

for sleep so most use continuous flow at home.

There are very few people who can't use some form of pulse or demand

when they are at relatively low levels of flow. I'm a person who can't

use my pulse very often because of my severe sinus and allergy problems.

However, I think if I was on gas instead of liquid there would probably

be some form of conserver that would work for me. The demand flow of the

Helios equipment just doesn't work adequately. At higher flows most

people do find themselves going full time to continuous and at very high

flows continuous is the only choice.

now i finally get it!!!

yeah Joyce!!!

the conserver enables the metal tanks to work on pulse

very interesting

i have one and didn't even know it

the regulator that they gave me for the metal tanks has demand settings and a continuous flow setting

when i used the continuous flow setting,

the tank was used up very quickly

most of the time when i use the metal tanks,

i use the demand settings

it has taken me 3 years to figure out what you are talking about

listen to your body [and your oximeter]

it will tell you when you need to go from demand to continuous

and it will tell you when you need to increase the liters per minute

then when you see your doc, you tell the doc what is working best for you

the exception is when sleeping, you need continuous flow

I hear yo, Bruce.........I have the big unit for when I am at home, a sequal

eclipse and also go thru about 40 of the small tanks every 2 weeks.....for when

I am out by myself.......I use the eclipse when I am out with my husband.it is

too heavy for me to manuver myself in and out of the car, shopping carts, etc.

A couple of times when I was running low on the tanks and wanted to try to push

one more stop in, I would switch to pulse.......found out this is NOT a good

thing for me to do. I feel like I am not getting enough to breathe all riht.

take care and thanks,
