Guest guest
I'm not sure about this. But, I did want to remind you that if the bacon is fried until it is very crispy, it is allowed once per week (whether or not sugar is added). -Joanna > > Ok I live near Abbeville, Louisian (small town).. None of the small grocery stores have sugar free bacon..And the Walmart in abbeville does not carry Gwaltney bacon... I serched the Lafayette WalMarts and found they did... There was an empty spot with the tag reading low sodium Gwaltney bacon.. And then they had Gwaltney Hardwood Bacon.. It does not say " sugar free' but when listing the ingredients it is cured with.. it DID NOT list sugar.. When all others do... Is this Hardwood Bacon the surgar free one.. or is the empty spot the one I needed to look at?????? >

Guest guest
Hilarious- I can relate to that feeling! I just picked up a generic low sodium from my supermarket that doesn't list sugar. I wonder why the low sodium leaves the sugar out? Anyone know? Just curious. Well, as with anything, you should use it with caution since you don't know for sure. But it's a good sign that it doesn't list suger. Just make sure you fry it up crispy!!! Joanna > > I know... but call me greedy.. Guest guest
My guess as to why low-sodium varieties don't have sugar (or not as much) is that the reason for adding sugar to bacon is to counter the saltiness of the salt used for curing it. I tried making my own bacon once (well, salt pork really since I didn't smoke it) with just salt and spices and didn't add sugar, and it was so salty it was inedible! That said, I'm not sure how they cure the bacon with less salt, and I wonder if they add some other chemicals into the mix? I have no idea. But if it works for people, that's good! misha Hilarious- I can relate to that feeling! I just picked up a generic low sodium from my supermarket that doesn't list sugar. Guest guest
I live right outside of Baton Rouge in Denham Springs and I find Gwaltney NO SUGAR ADDED bacon at Wal Mart and a few of the local Associated Grocers markets. Not saying you'll drive all the way down here but I only buy the one with NO SUGAR ADDED on the label and it's not low sodium. The low sodium variety doesn't say no sugar. If you have an Albertson's close by, they always take special order requests. Just Google Gwaltney bacon and bring the company information when you go. Make sure you talk to a manager and follow up. Wal Mart is supposed to special order foods by request too, but I've NEVER had ANY luck with that. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - Jan 2008 > > Ok I live near Abbeville, Louisian (small town).. Guest guest
AGREED - bacon is a crucial part of my diet. I forgot to add in the last email.... If they do get your Gwaltney bacon, it freezes really well. Misty > > I know... but call me greedy.. Guest guest
But, I did want to remind you that if the bacon is fried until it is very crispy, it is allowed once per week (whether or not sugar is added). I didn't see this thread but you can eat bacon every day if it doesn't have sugar and if you want to. It's only if it has sugar in it that it needed to be crisp and once a week. Guest guest
Well while we're on the subject of bacon, I made an awesome dish this weekend! I wrapped large scallops in 1/2 piece raw bacon and put a toothpick in each one. I then basted with a homemade thai sweet chili sauce and broiled each side. SO GOOD! LONG LIVE BACON! Guest guest
Yummy idea Joanna I did something similar and recently made bacon wrapped shrimp and asparagus spears. I keep lots of bacon in the freezer, so I ended up cooking the bacon half way before wrapping the precooked shrimps (from Trader Joes), and then baked them with aspargus tucked inside - sealed with a toothpick. I agree - Long Live Bacon! The homemade thai sweet chili sauce - wow that sounds yummy too - can I ask for the recipe!
