BUT... Peanuts and cashews are legumes (not technically nuts) and some say that they have failed on SCD from eating these. I am not basing this on any personal experience, just what I've read. I've actually been too scared to try them! OTOH, the idea that one can fail on SCD from using peanut butter didn't exist when I started, and peanut butter brownies worked just fine for me, even though I came to prefer pecan brownies. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

If my brain isn't totally off-line, I seem to recall that there were kids who fixed on peanut butter the way they had been fixed on starches, and then the parents couldn't get them to eat anything else. And, some of the kids didn't tolerate them well. Keep in mind that just as everyone's IBS/IBD tolerates different things, the ASD kids may have slightly different reactions to stuff. For instance, Pecanbread recommends starting dairy-free because so many of the children have been casein-free before coming to SCD that it's not a good idea to hit their systems with both the die-off and a food they haven't encountered in a long time. However, for IBS/IBD, unless you already know you have a casein intolerance, you can start with yogurt and DCCC. It's the old " one size doesn't fit all. Guest guest
I don't believe that is entirely accurate, Marilyn. Lots of people on this list had/have problems with peanuts - I've read of it many times. Including me - it was the only nut/legume I did have a problem with and I was advised on the precursor to this list, early on, not to try peanut butter too soon, which ended up being prescient advice for me. OK, I can accept that, although there are plenty of foods about which that can be said. <smile> There was a period when I wasn't very active on the old list, particularly right after Katrina, and it's altogether possible that I may have missed something. All I can speak for is that I remember the peanut butter issue arising out of the ASD lists. Thanks for bringing this up, however, as I would really hate for someone to get incorrect advice. That's why we need multiple long-term SCDers with varied experience on here. No one person can retain all the information! Guest guest
Great point- my nephews are ASD and one of them LITERALLY will only eat 4 foods. Are they on SCD? That would be handy, they could come visit you and have perfectly legal foods =) Cheers!Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Prednisone 7.5 mg
Guest guest
You should ask on pecanbread.com - that's exactly the kind of advice they know best. Mara > I wish! I've been trying to get my sister to slowly transition (they actually live in town). The challenge is getting her younger guy on it. I can tell he's got gut issues, but he's the one who only eats 4 foods. And besides the peanut butter, none are SCD legal. He has such intense sensory issues that he won't go near any other food. Her struggle is figuring out how to break the cycle. Does she put him on meds to ease the anxiety so that he might try something new which in turn would make his diet better and get him off the meds? I am not actually looking for an answer, just posing the question She is going to start by doing GFCF and see if she can't trick him with some similar looking foods. It's a start!!! > -Joanna > > >> Are they on SCD? Guest guest
I've been on the list more then 5 years and peanut butter was the first scd treat we had after the intro. I have to agree with Marilyn that It wasn't until (in my recollection) pecanbread changed from Elaine's kids and got bigger that peanut butter got changed. Other things I can think of are taking so slow introducing yogurt and foods in general. I remember talking to Lucy was back and she just ate everything that was legal from the beginning.
