Hi,

I'm 29 and I just got coverage. I had the people that manage the

insurance at my company call United Healthcare and explain that it was

not cosmetic and that TMJ is covered in my policy, and that since this

is to prevent TMJ and to relieve some of my TMJ symptoms, it should be

covered. I got a letter 10 days later saying it was covered.

Hi Ydanga,

I am definately over 29 lol My insurance excludes TMJ and bite

problems, but covers other medically necessary procedures. My OS

stressed the skeletal problems with my jaw, my frequent choking, and

abnormal eating (not bite related - my jaws overclose to the point

where I have had to eat with food pocketed in my cheeks, and using my

cheek muscles to push tiny bits of food to the back molars to chew -

I thought EVERYONE ate this way!! lol).

What I have noticed, is that it is really your OD and OS who do the

best battle for you IF - and this is a big " if " , your insurance does

not exclude orthognathic surgery for any reason. If it is not

excluded, then it is up to your OS primarily to write the best defence

for your coverage. My approval was preauthorized within about three

weeks of the OS letter to my insurance.

Good luck with this!

Hugs,

Fran

Hi Fran, interesting to hear you write about the frequent

choking...I do that too. In fact I'm so paranoid about choking that

my kids think I'm nuts when I'm freaking out at them about sitting

down and being calm whenever they eat :).

That's just one more thing I can tell people (i.e. astonished sister-

in-law that can't believe I would do anything like this) when they

wonder what the heck I've done to myself.

Wearing down my back teeth, receding gums, choking on food because

it's not chewed up enough, joint problems, mouth breathing

(healthier to breathe through your nose, I hear).....

I also have to keep reminding myself about all the reasons at this

point in my recovery.
