Guest guest
You might try asking this at the pecanbread group. I know I've read posts from a few parents whose kids have this problem. Guest guest
Hi, thanks for your post, which I found in my researching. It sounds like the low fat diet of grains & fruit was therapeutic for your daughter's GERD but exacerbated her IBD, and SCD healed her IBD but exacerbated her GERD. I have Crohn's disease and have kept it at bay by following SCD successfully for about 9 years. However, within the last 4 years I have developed esophagitis/GERD and in the last year it has become worse enough to put me on Prilosec, which my docs want me on forever. Being that I worked so hard to avoid meds by being on SCD, I am not about to succumb to med taking for the GERD. Thus I am experimenting with eliminating foods, trying to discover a possible food allergy; so far I suspect the yogurt or dairy may be a culprit but it is also a possibility that the high animal fat content, food heating, or other characteristic of SCD may promote acid reflux, as in your daughter's experience. There is a another patient who posted on the internet that he developed GERD on SCD too. SCD is a great dietary therapy & has helped me a lot but due to my experience and that of a few others it may not be optimum for perfect health or perhaps it is healthy for only a certain number of years. Then again, some people have had their GERD helped by SCD. I guess it is person-specific and related to the kind of diet a person was consuming before SCD. I am in the process of experimenting with the raw food diet, which is related to SCD but variated, and contains lot of digestive support. The raw food diet has helped a number of those with UC. The Paleothian/ " caveman " diet, similar to SCD & the raw food diet, yet slightly different, has helped many with inflammatory disease as well and is another option for my experimentation. SCD 9 years > > My 11 year old was diagnosed with esophagitis and acid reflux last year. We followed an typical acid reflux diet with whole grains and fresh fruit and low fat. Guest guest
I struggle with occasional GERD and what I've found is that avoiding anything overly acidic helps a lot. That is: tea, tomatoes, lemon, vinegar, and diet cola if you have one occasionally. So it might not be the SCD per se, but acidic foods you're eating on it. I'd rather not take long term Prilosec either, because supposedly it weakens your bones. If raw foods work for you, that's great. I find that eating Paleo SCD helps me also, although I refuse to give up peanut butter, as I tolerate it well.-- Hi, thanks for your post, which I found in my researching.
