Guest guest
Reni - I'm confused: are you getting braces or are you getting your surgery without braces? Don't they have to put braces on before the surgery so they will have some way of attaching the splint and bands? ~~~Diane > Well, the question is finally answered and I will not be one of the > fortunate few that have the surgery prior to surgery. Guest guest
Diane, I am about to get my braces on. It will probably be Oct by the time they do all the molds and I get the braces on. I am having the surgery and the Ortho says that by my consult on Oct 3rd, he will have an idea of how far off that will be. The comment I made about not being one of the lucky few that didn't need braces was referring to the fact that a small percentage of people do not need pre-op braces. I'm not sure what they do for the bands or splints. My understanding is they still have to post-op braces, so maybe they get the brackets prior to surgery. Maybe someone will share this information with us. My son's has grey bands on his braces right now, and that's pretty neat. If you want to try that. > > Well, the question is finally answered and I will not be one of the > > fortunate few that have the surgery prior to surgery. Guest guest
Well, Reni - Welcome to the Braces Club! I got my wires and bands (ones on first molars only) on Tuesday. My mouth hurt that night, so I didn't have much to eat. Here it is, Friday, and my teeth still hurt, but that's a good thing; it indicates that the teeth are starting to do their thing. Last night I had a hamburger for dinner and it took me about twenty minutes to eat it. I gnawed at it and took small bites. Thursday morning I had to go back to the OD because one of my o-rings popped off a bracket and the wire had partially slipped off. My OD's assistant put the wire back in the bracket and used a wire tie instead of an o-ring. The color of my o-rings is silver, which my OD says is a good color that won't pick up food stains and won't stand out if you're trying to camouflage your braces. I'm not ready for any colored o-rings yet; I'm still trying to get used to these braces!! Oh, and I think the gap between my two upper front teeth is starting to close; I usually slide my tongue in the space but can no longer do that - how amazing that my teeth are already starting to move!! I'm SO excited! And, just think, this will all be happening to you really soon!! / Well, that's it for now. Keep in touch. Have a nicew weekend! ~~ Diane > > > Well, the question is finally answered and I will not be one of > the > > > fortunate few that have the surgery prior to surgery. Guest guest
I dunno, either. But I do believe that everyone I've read with posts about " no braces for the surgery " has had arch bars. For my money, I'd rather have the traditional brackets and wires, which involved, best I remember, an $800 installation fee. I dunno the cost of the arch bars, and it may be significantly less. Probly is. Best I understand it all, the arch bars are rigid metal bars that are wired in around the dental arches, in that most-to-be-desired perfect u-shape. They usually give the docs a way to stabilize the surgical arches during and or after the op, with wires, bands or whatever. And or to wire in a splint. They also usually allow the gums to grow over the wiring. That is not, from what I have heard, earnestly to be desired, in terms of a pleasing experience, from 1 to 10, when this stuff is removed. But nobody suggested such to me, because my mouth was apparently terribly off-kilter and needed major help even before I reached surgery, and for a couple of months after... I'd be sure to ask about what my alternatives were, if someone were proposing the surgery to me today. Nothing wrong with wanting to be an informed customer... or patient.... Guest guest
My son had a big gap between his front teeth. He had the braces put on the beginning of June and there is no more gap. He is a football player, honor student, and popular at school, but he never looked happy and didn't smile. Now he does, and it makes me so happy. I think, sometimes, we really feel our children's pain. It does happen and I am so glad. My teeth are pretty strait, as far as looking at a row of teeth. There are a couple of teeth that have shifted due to my bite, but not bad. I am assemetrical and have a cross bite (or is that the same thing). My R TMJ meniscus is out of place when my mouth is closed. Yes I will be joining the braces club. By the way, I have seen on this site the mention of braces being 8K, they are only 5K here in NC. That seems like a big difference. Rene > > > > Well, the question is finally answered and I will not be one of > > the > > > > fortunate few that have the surgery prior to surgery. Guest guest
Thanks. My ortho mentioned that there were alternatives for others, but not for my. As I posted earlier, my teeth are not really crooked to look at just the teeth. My bite is terribly loop-sided thougth. There's like a slant and my teeth set right on top of each other. Thanks for the info on the arch bars, and I don't think they could talk me into that. Sounds much worse than braces. Rene` > > Diane, > > I am about to get my braces on.
