Guest guest
Actually - the way I learned it - that's not true for roasted nuts - because these are then immediately ground into nut butter - so no need to add preservatives which are only added to products that may have a long shelf life. However, in the case of WF, where you can grind your own, but they don't grind them immediately, it is possible that some kind of preservative has been added. So for the most part, in bottled jars, this is okay - when it is grind your own, I'm not sure - but perhaps it is better to be cautious and not use it or to ask first. OTOH, I've used those butters occasionally because the whole thing slipped my mind and I never reacted. And I believe Misty has as well - maybe she'll chime in and say if she has - so maybe they are okay. Mara > Your instincts were correct- it is NOT okay to use nut butters made from roasted nuts. The process they use when they roast them involves using starches to keep everything separated. > You can give your hubby the raw walnut/raw cashew butter. > Looks like you'll have to eat up that delicious almond butter yourself!!! > -Joanna > > > >> >> I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. You grind it your-self there at the store. But, I remember it said whole dry roasted almonds. Is this o.k. Guest guest
> So, if you make your almond butter yourself from roasted nuts its ok, but if you buy already made roasted almond butter it's not ok? No, the reverse. roasted almond butter is okay. butter you make from commercially roasted and packaged nuts is not okay because the latter is likely to have preservatives whereas the former is not. > Just to make sure I understand. > > If you buy already made raw almond butter is that ok? raw is also okay. Guest guest
Holly, you are right. Katy Almonds Legal Nuts sold in mixtures are not allowed, as most are roasted with a starch coating. Nuts should only be used as nut flour, in recipes, until diarrhea has subsided. UGH!!! I thought it was the roasted/salted MIXED nuts that weren't legal. ____________________________________________________________ L.L.Bean Sale Shop the Daily Markdown http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/4c76567541056596f7dst05vuc
Guest guest
I think you'll be all right, Holly. I learned it this way, but then I recently saw an email from Elaine Gottschall which made the point you did. I think it is one of those things that got stricter over time than what E. originally proposed like with soy oil and peanut butter. Mara > UGH!!! I thought it was the roasted/salted MIXED nuts that weren't legal. I just spent a bunch on some roasted pecans (no salt) from Trader Joe's, and some roasted macadamia nuts (no salt) from the bulk bin at Sprouts. My only concern was the scoop I used for the macadamias (it could have been in any number of illegals), but since I couldn't find macadamias anywhere else, I threw caution to the wind. I hope I'm far enough along on the diet that this won't cause problems, as I've already made everything into brownies to stock my freezer. I can't afford to toss everything and start over :-( > > Holly > Crohn's > SCD 12/01/08 > > >>>> >>>> I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. Guest guest
You should probably slow down on adding in new things - I know he is thinner than he was last time, but you don't want to aggravate things and make it worse again. If the bleeding continues, I would check out the vitamin E enema protocol - it really helps a lot of UC people. (though not all). http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=67345 (Ignore the diet part - just consult the enema instructions). added a few more of her own notations (though she says it didn't help her): http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/message/47308 > > Thank-you for slowing me down, its real hard though, husband is at 164 lbs and holding., gotta go to Dr. next Tues. he was at 171 last time dr.saw him that was 6 or 7 wks ago, I did do the jared walnut cashew blend 1tsp. monday, then tues did 2 T pureed peaches tues he said peaches hurt his stomach 30 mins or so.Then last night I made him a smoothie with 1/4 avocado , 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/2 cup grape j.,1 T honey. and last night he bleed 2 or 3 times. so its just very frustrating, live and learn. > >>>>> >>>>> I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. I thought it was only the mixed nuts that we had to be concerned about. That's correct. The starch in the roasted nuts that we are concerned about is used to hold salt and flavorings on because they are using no oil. Plain, roasted, unsalted nuts typically do not have starch on them. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Guest guest
back to the nut question. What about raw mixed nuts that are not roasted or salted? I found them at my coop, I think they are organic too.thanks! That's what I thought too. I thought it was only the mixed nuts that we had to be concerned about. Amber > > UGH!!!
