the same rule apply if one is not a cigarette smoker, but a smoker of another

herb??? for how

long before someone goes under anesthesia should they stop smoking???

Hi katelyn

I had upper and lower jaw surgery 3 weeks ago and am also a " smoker " .

I stopped only a couple of days before the surgery and had no problems

at all. Seeing as its an 'accepted' from of pain relief I think

you'll find it won't really affect anything. Hope this helps.

-Katelyn - My OMS requests that his patients stop cigarette smoking 24

hours prior to surgery. Cigarette smoking prolongs the recovery period

associated with any type of surgery, because it prevents your body

from getting the optimum level of oxygenated blood to the tissues. It

is important to let your Anesthesiologist know that you smoke, because

smokers have a tendency to have other breathing problems to begin

with, which will alter the effects of the anesthesia you are given.

Smoking complicates pulmonary function. A smoker's pulmonary

epithelium is different from a non-smoker's epithelium (epithelium is

the type of cells which are produced in and line the lungs, allowing

your lungs to function properly). BTW, I am in the medical profession,

work in a Pathology lab, and assist Pathologists in the diagnosis of

Cancer.Hope this info helps. ~~~ Diane (Idaho) -- In
