Did he outgrow his band? It is considered too small when there is no more foam

to remove when doing the adjustment. Your results don't sound very good. Do you

have any photos? Where did you go, and does the ortho have experience? My

daughter had brachy of about 96% and graduated at 85%. She wore her band for 5

mo from age 5 to 10 mo old. If you had ear offset you most likely had plagio too

- since an asymmetric head would cause the ear to be offset. Do you have any

numbers for that? Do you have a copy of the starscan reports? If you do please

post them or send to me. If you really got such little improvement I would

demand a new band.

You can see my daughters head here...

ear offset was 7 point something. So anyways we only got one scan in the

beginning then one at the end of the 13 weeks. He only went down to 94 brachy

and his ear offset barely changed. His head is still way flat and he still has

facial asymmetry. I have no idea why we got such poor results and his orthotist

was actually happy with his head change.

No he didn't outgrow it. His ortho told us that he didn't think his head would

improve anymore because he was close to 12 months. So we decided to stop after 3

months with basically no improvement. I do have photos and there really is no

change at all except is head is not so wide when looking straight at him. He did

have plagio, well still does, and he has facial assymetry. I am not sure what

the exact numbers were but they really didn't get better. I am just really

hoping the cranil sacral therapy will help. I have heard a lot of good things

about it so fingers crossed.

sorry to tell you, but your ortho is a complete moron. Many babies start after

12 months and see a lot of improvement. I would say it is questionable from 18

months on, but some still see good changes. " Close to 12 months " is absolutely

no reason to stop. Your babies head definitely grew in the 3 months he was

banded, but your band must not have fit very well if you didn't see much change.

It might not be dramatic, but you should have seen definite progress. If your

ortho scanned your son, he should have all the numbers in the scan report. I

would actually go and see him and make a stink and get all or some of your money

back. I would also contact orthomerica (maker of the starband) and tell them

about your bad experience and see if there is anything they can do - including

not providing starbands for your idiot ortho any more. Of course all this

assumes you followed the protocol of 23 hours a day, since the band only works

if worn regularly. If nothing else I would appreciate your providing the name of

your ortho and his/her practice. That way in the future if anyone asks about

them, we know not to recommend them.

As for CST, some people do say it helps, but generally banding is considered

much more of a sure thing. CST is an alternative treatment without the

scientific studies to prove that it is effective. If you don't have other

treatment options at this point I would do it.

Depending where you live I would consider a second band from a competent ortho

to get some progress. Although I know this would be difficult emotionally after

3 months of mostly wasted effort. Also it can be quite hard financially. Even if

you did decide on another band, you could do CST along with that.

If you do the CST or even another band, I suggest pictures ever week or two to

track the progress. They you'll now if something is happening.

Actually 9 to 12 months is a period when very many babies do not grow much

because they are moving around much more and may be eating less because they are

more distracted and not fully interested in solids yet. Our kid only gained 3

oz. in those 3 months. She was banded then and didn't get much increase in the

straight head circumference measurement. But just because they don't grow right

there doesn't mean they aren't growing. Ours filled in more below the place they

measure the head circ. So if you see improvement you may have had growth.

I also hate to read about people being told not to expect growth after a year.

We had major growth spurts at about 13 months and 16 months. I wish my kid was

still banded for the 16 month one. You never know when your kid will be growing

more than the average they are referencing.

Find another provider if you can afford it. If not, go back and push to get the

service you already paid for. If the band still fits, you should still be able

to use it.

Best,

ED

I don't know exactly when, but my daughter's head grew a lot between 8 and 10

months. Then when I had a follow up visit by 14 months it had grown even more.

My daughter had a big head that always grew. You're right to point out that all

babies don't grow at exactly the same ages. You want to catch the growth when

ever it happens.
