Hi ,

I have a sweet tooth too. Best advice, make yourself fill up on meats and

veggies first! Then treat yourself to a few goodies.

During/after intro, I drank a lot of watered down welches grape juice, and gave

myself some down time to relax and start healing! You deserve some rest - and

this a good time for it, if you can make it a priority. I was told my skin

looked " green " during the intro diet, I felt faint, and totally out of it, but

it passed after a few days.

Here are some of my favorite sweet treats:

Just starting out: Pear Sauce is Awesome - I just bake a few peeled, chopped,

de-seeded pears for 40 minutes, then puree

A week or two in: Smoothies Rock - as you progress through into fruits & yogurt,

banana, nut butter, blueberries, yogurt, honey, cooked berries, etc, I would

have one for breakfast daily.

A couple weeks in (or longer depending on symptoms): blueberry (or other fruit)

cobblers. Fill a casserole dish with fruit, top with a mixture of 1 cup almond

flour, 1/4 butter or coconut oil, 2 tbsp honey, baking soda, salt. (adjust

mixture to your liking)

Homemade ice cream using homemade 24 hour yogurt, or make yogurt with 1/2 & 1/2

and stir in honey - use as topping on cobblers or squash/pumpkin pies

I am now into the diet 4 months, and my favorite sweet treet is this:

almond butter and honey mixed together, dipped into slightly melted coconut oil,

then froze in balls/lumps in the freezer for up to 1 hour. They are awesome.

Just becareful not to over indulge into too many sweet treats! I find that if I

make myself eat meats/veggies, cheeses first, then I don't eat nearly as many

sweets.

Good Luck!

First of all, congratulations on starting the SCD. It really is the beginning

of healing for us.

Now there's no problem having sweets, as long as they're the legal kind --

that's why this is the *Specific* Carbohydrate Diet. Take an overripe banana

(and I do mean overripe -- it should have black spots (not brown, black)

starting to appear, or at least be falling off the stem), maybe make some

applesauce (just peeled apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg -- or whatever other spices

you like with apples), or just scoop up a spoonful of honey, enjoy, and say to

the bacteria that have been overgrowing your intestines, " Na na na na na, you

can't have any! "

I'm not sure what to suggest for crunchiness, though someone else (probably

Marilyn -- she knows (and invented) a ton about cooking for the SCD) should be

able to help.

Hi ,

The first couple of weeks are the hardest. I will never forget how difficult

that

period was for me, even though it seems like ages ago. I remember feeling

incredibly tired and hungry all the time.

Make sure you have lots of non-sweet foods on hand at all times to prevent you

from giving in to sweet cravings. Your palette will slowly adjust and and one

day you

won't believe that you liked all that sweet stuff. It takes time but it will

happen.

Virtually all people with IBD have been carb junkies for most of their lives.

There was

a study of people with Crohns that showed a much higher carb intake than the

general

population. I find that my symptoms dissipate significantly when I keep my

consumption of sweets to a minimum.

My advice for sweet cravings would be ripe bananas or pear sauce. Go easy on the

honey. I have learned the hard way that i do not do well with it at all. Sorry I

don't have

any suggestions for crunchy stuff for the beginning phase.

Right now, the 'bad bugs' in your body are clamoring to be fed and their

preferred food

is sugar. They are fighting for their survival which is why you're having all

these cravings.

the purpose of the intro is to starve the bugs.

SCD isn't easy but it's well worth it. I could never go back to SAD. The very

thought makes

me sick.

Hang in there. It gets worse before it gets better. I know that many of us have

made

incredible progress on the diet. I still shudder at the thought of how sick I

was

when I started.

You're going to feel so much better in a few weeks! Trust me.

HTH,

When u say homemade ice-cream, are you just adding the 24 HR yogurt to an

ice-cream maker?

I " dripped " the yogurt first, and then later started using half & half yogurt

(homemade yogurt made with half & half). I cooked up some berries into a syrup

with honey and tossed it into the ice cream maker with the yogurt. I also made a

cherry ice cream with toasted peacans.

And I guess I shouldn't leave out the super easy " soft serve " ice cream you can

get from tossing frozen banana chunks into the food processor.

I've made a number of ice creams with SCD yogurt -- I love making the

yogurt out of half and half or full cream, then mixing it with my

flavorings and putting it in an ice cream maker.

Marilyn do you have any ratios? I once tried the one that's been referenced on the list but I hated it and felt so bad throwing it away. I'd be willing to try again though. UC-C 12/09SCD 1/10Daily, CLO, Magnesium, bromelain, acidophilus Mom of 2 crazy monkeys :-)

Hi ! I am 7 weeks into the diet. I have found that as I have been healing

I am finally getting better nourished and the cravings have slowed

signifigantly. I joke with my wife when she has something sweet and ask her if I

can just smell it. Lately the goodies that she eats smell awful to me and I

can't believe I used to eat them! Take it one day at a time. The payoff is well

worth it! Good Luck!

Me too Marla! LOL. At work when people bring all kinds of crap for birthdays I

just smell everything and strangely enough I remember the taste and then my

craving is over. It's like magic :)

(Although I do drive people crazy asking them if I can smell their food!)
