Guest guest
Hi Ted, don't b! I too before my diagnosis lost 45 pounds in 3 mo's. then i gain a little but by the time i got my 1st biopsy/vats i lost my appetite for 3 months and now just because i'm on prednisone (steroid) & amitryptylin (anti-depressant/pain reliever) do i even have an appetite..i only weight 119 which it took me a year and a 1/2 to gain..i weighed 110 when i was released from hospital 10/08..i weighed 130 when i went in & not 1/10 i weigh 119..go figure. It's hard to eat & breath at the same time. Plus i find i get really full really fast. Do you experience the same? I also notice that after i eat i have to wait a long while so that i'm not coughing & gagging due to shortness or breath & heaviness because i'm so full. I snack alot. And when i do have a craving i eat it. I hope that helped you. I have the opposite problem...the pounds are dropping off. I'm 5'11" amd before IBF my normal weight was between 180 - 190. I'm now at 150....twenty pounds down since November. Scans and blood work have ruled out bad stuff like cancer, etc. Don't have the appetite I used to have, so I'm eating smaller meals more often supplemented with Ensure. I attend a fibrosis support group at Hospital in Naperville, Illinois. The leader suggesed Megace, a prescription used by those with anorexia, aids, etc. She said it stimulates the appetite but my pulmonologist says the side effect of blood clots is too danegrous. I'm wondering if anyone in this group has this problem and if they've any suggestions.Peace,Ted, 78, IL, IPF/UIP March 09P
Guest guest
Hi Dot, I too fill up fast. I'm the family cook because my wife has Alzheimer's disease and has forgotten how to cook. I'll prepare a meal but when it's time to eatI have no desire. I'm not on any meds and want to avoid Prednizone. I think if I could gain some weight back,I'd have more energy and stamina. As it is now, I'm a bag of skin and bone struggling to keep up. Guest guest
Ted, Your wife's situation must make it even harder for you with energy levels. I too am the Family Cook but at least I can cajole the Hubby into the odd meal & he does help me with drying the Dishes ! You know it would be perfectly fine, nutritionally speaking, for your wife to also have one of her meals consisting of the Protein/Vege Juice/Fibre concoctions that I was telling you about. I find it great at Lunch-time. Cheese/Avocado on Bread/Toast goes nicely with it if your wife wants a little more in the way of Comfort Food! That may help you conserve a little more of your energy.
