Guest guest
Hi all, Someone once mentioned that Penzey's was supposed to be pretty good for SCD, but has anyone actually found out if their baking spice blend is legal? Speaking of powders, do we trust cinnamon or do we have to grate our own cinnamon sticks?? thanks, Robin
Guest guest
Robin I've used Penzey's for years, long before I started SCD. The spice blends are questionable, so it is better to purchase individual spices and make your own blends. I don't believe Penzey's uses anti-caking agents, based on my own experiences with blends (used in cooking for others until my 4th year on SCD) in the humid climate where I live. But it is usually better to be safe than sorry, so unless you've been on SCD for a while and are symptom-free, it is usually best to purchase the individual spices and mix your own blends. I've had no issues with the single-ingredient powders, such as ground cinnamon or onion powder or nutmeg, etc. Clumping occurs after a month in the humidity where I live. So you can grind your own cinnamon, but the Penzey's ground cinnamons are OK. Kim M. We can use Penzey's cinnamon -- in fact, I use all three kinds. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Thanks, Marilyn. I guess I knew that but I thought perhaps Penzey's blends were okay. It's funny how sometimes I think I am " fanatically adhering " and my brain starts in with the " but what if... " scenarios. I guess it's a good thing I'm on the listserv!! Yeah, our brains love to generalize. And we misremember sooo easy. That's why I'm forever talking about keeping a food and results diary, because we mis-concatenate things and don't recognize connections or the lack thereof. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
I get my herbs and spices from Penzey's, too, individually, that is. But they send little sample jars of this and that and it seems like every one of them so far has something either SCD illegal or it doesn't work for me. My sister loves these little samples!
