Guest guest
I found I do not dump on sugar when two months out my blood sugar went really low one night (dropped to 11). The only way to get it back up quickly was two big spoons of sugar in some warm water. I have talked to other men and they also do not dump on sugar. How many of you do or do not dump with sugar? Guest guest
Dennis, I don't really know, and I like it that way! I do not eat sugar if I can avoid it. And I usually don't eat much fat... I don't think I've ever dumped but very, very mildly once, and I know that was sugar... a teaspoon in a cup of coffee and I drank half... Boy, guys have all the luck - lose really fast, and no dumping... Pshaw! LOL Sharon in D.C. Guest guest
I really don't think this is just a guys issue. It seems that I have heard several women mention that they don't dump with sugar either. I know that the hyperglycemia thing is common among men and women after surgery. Guest guest
I don't dump immediately on small amounts of sugar. Although I have never really pushed it. An occasional something with a little sugar doesn't seem to bother me. Even on Thanksgiving, I had a taste of a few pies and cakes with no immediate adverse effects. However, about 3 hours later, a little low blood sugar incident. I spent Christmas Day at the home of a support group member, so everything was sugar free, except for the Jack s. LOL However, I do experience what has been called " late dumping " and sometimes the " sleepies " . About 2 or 3 hours after having a few too many carbs, I feel the drop in blood sugar. Sometimes after an occasional small portion of white carbs, I'll just want to lie down for about an hour. The other late dump occurs if I have just a little too much fat such as in a steak or should I sneak in a piece of skin from chicken, about 4 or 5 hours later, I will be in the immediate need of the latrine. No sweating, palpitations or hurling. Guest guest
I have been wondering how accurate this is: I recall being at an information meeting with one of the surgeons who was currently at Mt. Sinai in NYC, and the topic of dumping came up, and he said that while most postop patients experience dumping during the first year or two, nearly 70% will no longer experience it thereafter. Anyone know if this is true, or have heard the same? Lucille <<I really don't think this is just a guys issue. It seems that I have heard several women mention that they don't dump with sugar either. Guest guest
Well, from my personal experience, at over 3 1/2 years out, I dump worse now than I ever did. Sometimes I can't explain why even. I didn't touch sugar at all the first 14 months after surgery, so I can't say what it would have been like. Now, even the hidden sugars get me....ie in salad dressings and such. So, in my case, to date, this is false.
