I have a few comments/concerns. I fully support not having advertising or self promotion in our messages. I think however, that if we are allowed to mention ANY websites in a positive manner where individuals, including lurkers, might find information then we shouldn't be prohibited from mentioning those affiliated with list members. I frequently mention that I buy my Whey Stack from a particular website that, to my knowledge, is not connected with any of our group members. However, if I were to discover that a member on our site was having a sale and could provide a more economical source for members, I wouldn't be allowed to mention it. This seems to do a disservice to our listmates. As for saying negative things about a product in which a member has an interest, this too causes some concerns. For example, if I were to start a business selling ephedra over the Internet and included a signature tag that listed the name of my website, say " www.i_sell_ephedra.com " , would it then be against list rules for people to discuss the dangers of taking ephedra (forgetting for a moment that it will soon become " illegal " to sell it)? Coming up with rules to manage a list this size is a Herculean task -- and I'm sure that there is no way to set them so that it will always make sense. I just wonder if we are not doing each other a disservice with this particular rule. How do we balance sharing information and still keep group free of blatant advertising or disrespectful flaming? It's a tough call. I appreciate all of the work that goes into making this list run smoothly. Thanks to our moderators and list owner! And, if you feel that someone would benefit from certain information, by all means, email them privately. > As for saying negative things about a product in which a member has > an interest, this too causes some concerns. Limiting the promotion of a business or someone's stake in a business to a sig tag line was really the only remedy. > Coming up with rules to manage a list this size is a Herculean task > -- and I'm sure that there is no way to set them so that it will always make > sense. Just think about it, almost 4000 members, with different backgrounds, experiences and temperaments, and the amount of restraint so often practiced is truly amazing! Who said we don't have willpower!
