Guest guest
Great question. And if you went ahead and tried to advance how would you know if you are reacting to what you are trying because you hadn't had relief from cramping or diarrhea yet anyhow? > > What am I missing here? >
Guest guest
My cramping and D took a long time to subside. Over a year. I should re-read the book, but I think that the idea is that you should keep peeling, de-seeding and cooking your fruit and veggies until D disappears. Guest guest
You do want to start adding in foods after a maximum of 5 days on the intro. diet, although some folks choose to wait a bit longer before beginning to add foods very slowly. There is a difference between a symptom subsiding and a symptom disappearing. Diarrhea will take longer than 5 days to disappear, that is for sure. The purpose of the intro. diet is to start calming down the symptoms, letting your digestion relax a bit. It doesn’t usually clear up symptoms immediately. The only rule to follow when you start adding more foods is to go very slowly, and stick to easy-to-digest and soft foods until you start feeling a major improvement in symptoms. Everyone is different, so what works for one will not work for another. The general rule for soft, easy-to-digest foods is remove skins, deseed if necessary, and cook well. The other rule to follow is to add just one food at a time, and give your digestion 3 to 4 days before adding another, depending on your body’s reaction. Obviously if your digestion reacts badly to one food immediately, then you’ll know to stop trying it and select another. Keeping a food and supplement log helps. After a few months you will have figured out your core group of foods, and the supplements your body will tolerate for now, so you don’t have to maintain the log as faithfully. The tricky part is that in the beginning stages your body is going to react to everything, or so it seems. As you progress on your healing journey you will be able to catch the more subtle signals that indicate a definite food reaction. In the beginning you just have to stick to the basic foods, well-cooked. There is a helpful list of food stages on pecanbread.com that can help you identify stage 1 foods, although you certainly don’t have to follow the suggestions exactly (I didn’t use the stages). http://pecanbread.com/p/how/stages.html You can expect a lot of ups and downs during the first year on SCD. Healing isn’t linear, there is improvement, then regression, then greater improvement. The good thing is that as time goes by each stage becomes shorter, less severe, occurs less frequently. I am quite sure you will have lots of questions as you progress. Keep asking! I am not going into too much detail in this reply because too much information can be overwhelming, and we are all so individual that you might not experience something that occurs to someone else. So best for you to ask as you go along. Kim M.
