Dole Pineapple Juice Not Legal?

From the NoMoreCrohns.com website:

IMPORTANT: I recently received an

email from a fellow SCDer that shows that Dole

Pineapple juice in the can, as listed in BTVC is no longer

legal -

" Dole 100% juice in the can is NO LONGER LEGAL. Spread the word,

I phoned them recently when I noticed a change in the label. They are

adding vitamin A and E now and the A is bound with cornstarch. My

daughter reacted severely to the juice recently which prompted me to

call. They were kind and informed me that yes, the new formula has

cornstarch...so sad for all of us SCD'ers.

It is the Dole 100% Pineapple Juice that is actually in the can, as

listed in BTVC. They are shelved in the juice aisle, and they are

NOT refrigerated. They also come in small individual sized 6 or 8

packs. There are a few of the old legal ones circulating that have

Vitamin C added, it is the Pineapple Juice with a new label that reads,

" with A & E added " that uses cornstarch as a binding

agent for the Vitamin A.

I have since written an email to Dole telling them how sad and

disappointed I was. I let them know that I was involved with a

group of people that cannot tolerate additives and I would be spreading

the word.

They phoned me back immediately. They were very kind and sympathetic, but

made it clear that the public demand for added vitamin supplementation

and a 'clear' juice has prompted the change. "

It can be difficult to find the " Contact

Us " link, but I suggest that all BTVC-SCDers go out to

http://www.dole.com/contactushome/tabid/1210/default.aspx#

and scroll down to the " Contact Us " and let Dole know what you

think of their action in changing a formerly safe product. I don't know

about you, but I don't feel like juicing fresh pineapples!

Apparently, the problem lies in the Vitamin A they are using -- it's

bonded to starch so they can have a clear juice. If it doesn't have added

Vitamin A, C, and E, it MIGHT be all right.

I called Dole to inquire/complain about this change and this is what I found

out...

-They have been adding vitamins A and E to the pineapple juice for over 5 years

now, so this is not a recent change.

-For about 7 years, they have binding these vitamins to a starch that is

processed from corn (they would not call it cornstarch, only a " starch processed

from corn " ).

So from what I can tell, Dole Pineapple Juice in a can has actually been ILLEGAL

for 5 years.

What do you think? Starches processed from illegal ingredients are illegal,

right?

I've never used the juice before because I had never read that it was one of the

legal ones, so I can't say that it has affected me negatively. But do I wish it

was legal because it would be so tasty in my morning smoothies!

So if we have pineapple juice from BEFORE this latest change, it's illegal? I

have a lot of it left!

It's probably no more then a year old. I think 5 years old would be well beyond

the expiration date! Dole's has never bothered me, but then traces of illegals

don't seem to (based on my meds all having illegals in them, and by living in a

non-SCD household).

if this latest email is true. So this was changed at the time of Elaine's

death, if not before. It does go to show us that prepared food can't be trusted

since it can be changed.
