when you first wake up...

My surgery date has been changed to Dec 7, btw. My biggest concern

right now is how I'll feel when I first wake up. I can be a little

panicky sometimes and I'm wondering if I'll feel like " uh-oh I can't

open my mouth. " Did any of you have issues like that? Or (hopefully)

did you just not care due to the meds?

Thanks!

Hi Sue,

When I first woke up from my surgery I didn't care if I could open my mouth or

what. I was on so many meds and I had been given many meds throughout the 14 hr

surgery that I wasn't bothered about what was going on around me, I was more

than less " out of it " .

Sue,

when i woke up after surgery the first thing that popped into my mind

was " thank god it's over! i've done it!!! no more waiting " . So I almost

felt relieved. Then I just wanted to sleep A LOT. They woke me up every

hour or so to check my vitals and to give me my meds and I remember

just wishing they would get it over with and leave me be. The most

uncomfortable part was probably the tubes in my nose because they also

had an oxygen mask over my face and that put added pressure on the

tubes. Eventually my mom after hearing me moan about it took it off

even though the nurse wasn't so thrilled about it but I felt miles

better. Seeing blood come out of one of the tubes (basically the blood

gets pumped out of your stomach so you don't feel sick) was also a lot

less scary than I had anticipated. I've a serious woose when it comes

to blood and I was just so happy to see that it was getting out of my

system preventing me from getting sick. I don't remember ever panicking

about breathing or the breathing really being an issue and that's

despite being heavily congested, with tubes down my nose and being

banded shut tight. Oh another thing that really bothered me was the two

IV tubes i had in my arm. One really started hurting about 12 hours

post-op and I was in a lot of pain so eventually they had to take it

out. I had a huge bruise for about 2 weeks after. The one recurring

thought I had my full 24 hours in the hospital was " I will get through

this!!! " So stay positive and it will fly by.

Good luck!

Hi Sue,

I too was very worried about freaking out when I woke up. However when I woke

up after

surgery I thought, la la la... Hey, seems I made it, that's cool. la la la.

Hey, there are

nurses all around, good times, I think I'm in recovery. la la la. Hey, I think

I need to throw

up. Hm. Oh well. and then I puked all over. The nurses obviously leapt into

gear and

cleaned me up immediately. Throwing up didn't hurt or anything. Actually it

felt great,

well as good as it could. I ended up throwing up 3 times and while it sucked,

it wasn't

horrible. I didn't freak out at all. They give you drugs that help you relax

and you are

pretty out of it.

Good luck!
