Guest guest
Your instincts were correct- it is NOT okay to use nut butters made from roasted nuts. The process they use when they roast them involves using starches to keep everything separated. You can give your hubby the raw walnut/raw cashew butter. Looks like you'll have to eat up that delicious almond butter yourself!!! -Joanna > > I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. You grind it your-self there at the store. But, I remember it said whole dry roasted almonds. Is this o.k. I need to know before I give to hubby today.?I also bought walnut butter with cashews, its in a jar (ingreds 100%Organic Ray Walnuts and 100% Organic raw Cashews)I can save this walnut one for later on but I need to know I am worried about the Dry Roasted Almonds I ground up ? >
Guest guest
So, if you make your almond butter yourself from roasted nuts its ok, but if you buy already made roasted almond butter it's not ok? Just to make sure I understand. If you buy already made raw almond butter is that ok? Thanks, June > >>> > >>> I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. Guest guest
UGH!!! I thought it was the roasted/salted MIXED nuts that weren't legal. I just spent a bunch on some roasted pecans (no salt) from Trader Joe's, and some roasted macadamia nuts (no salt) from the bulk bin at Sprouts. My only concern was the scoop I used for the macadamias (it could have been in any number of illegals), but since I couldn't find macadamias anywhere else, I threw caution to the wind. I hope I'm far enough along on the diet that this won't cause problems, as I've already made everything into brownies to stock my freezer. I can't afford to toss everything and start over :-( Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > >> > >> I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. You grind it your-self there at the store. Guest guest
I have used them A LOT. I always react to nut butters; however, I reacted to pre-jarred brands way more than the WF brand. I would proceed with caution. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - Jan 2008 > >> > >> I bought some almond butter yesterday from whole foods. You grind it your-self there at the store. Guest guest
That's what I thought too. I thought it was only the mixed nuts that we had to be concerned about. Amber > > UGH!!! Guest guest
Holly, You could always rinse them if you seem to have a problem. A little drying in a very low oven, or dehydrator of course if you have one, would take care of any moisture. But maybe they'll be OK. I haven't had trouble with individual nuts from Trader Joe's, though I usually get raw nuts. But I think I've had some roasted and been OK. UGH!!! Guest guest
Okay, I am totally embarrassed that I gave bad advice. However, I am happy that it sparked a discussion. I wanted to make sure this is correct... In a nutshell (HA HA HA!): -NO roasted nut mixes -YES roasted nuts (if just one kind) -YES raw nut butters -YES roasted nut butters (but they usually have skins so they are more advanced) -BE CAUTIOUS of bulk nuts as there might be cross-contamination Does that sound right? -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 20mg Prednisone
Guest guest
That sounds like a good idea! And if I wash them right before I make them into butter, I won't have to dehydrate either :-). I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for another local source of macadamias though. I'd feel better if they were packaged. I thought about asking for a clean scoop, but since other people are digging in the bin with " dirty " scoops, the nuts could still be potentially contaminated. Guest guest
Whew, thanks for the clarification to everyone who posted :-). I feel much better knowing I haven't been eating starch!
