Guest guest
I do origami. I do it for Christmas trees and also for Christmas cards. I can sit there and watch TV with a piece of paper in my hands and am perfectly happy not to nosh. If you want a good beginner book, try Steve and Megumi Biddle's " Essential Origami. Guest guest
I bought myself a digital camera for my birthday and have been learning how to use it. Got a copy of Paint Shop Pro and have also been learning how to use it to improve my photos and do some special effects kind of things. I'm sure everyone around me is bored to tears with the gazillon photos of my grandson, my Chihuahua, and my furry granddaughter (my son's pit bull, Loca). But it's kept me busy and entertained. Earlier this year I returned to an old hobby: gardening. I combined the two hobbies by taking lots of photos of plants which lead me to a third hobby - trying to identify the various mystery plants that I'd photographed. Under the guise of research I visit nurseries and libraries and bookstores and everyone's yard who will let me visit. Now I'm all excited because soon all of the new seed catalogs will come out and I can spend hours planning what I will plant next year. (Can you say obsessive?) LOL And yes, I find that I'm not nibbling constantly when I'm busy with my hobbies. Guest guest
I grew up thinking that I wasn't very creative or artistic either. I have relatives that can paint and draw very well. Some have sold paintings others have put their drawings to work for them as graphic designers. It wasn't until I was in my 30's that I realized that crocheting was a form of my creative and artistic ability. I have never crochted according to a pattern. My patterns are my own. I also discovered that I love doing pottery. My pottery is not some of the sculpting stuff you see but more practical like cups, bowls, vases, platters, etc. I definitely have a slight Indian flair to my pieces. Couldn't possibly be that I am part Cherokee. I also do some needlepoint and counted cross stich. I have some 40 Christmas tree ornaments that I made one year. The amazing thing is that if I keep my hands busy, I can't very well be putting food in my mouth. Guest guest
> I'd like to know what some of you do for a hobby or craft? I've never had one. I did watch my mom crochet for a bit. I crochet and do cross stitch. For stopping you from eating, you can't beat cross stitch, because 90% of it is done on white evenweave cloth, and you DON " T want to have food on your fingers or risk staining that cloth after you've put so much work into it, so you tend to not eat while you're stitching. Crocheting and knitting are similar -- don't want crumbs or stains in the work. And they all take 2 hands to do. I've seen in the craft stores (JoAnn's, 's) that they now have teach-yourself kits that come with a DVD so you can watch someone teach you how! What a cool idea! My grandmother taught me to stitch and to crochet, but I've always wanted to learn how to tat (it's a lacemaking technique) and none of the teach-yourself books I've tried have really made me understand how to do it. I may take up knitting this year -- I can cast on and I can knit in straight rows, but I don't know how to use the circular kneedles to make sweaters & such, and I'd like to learn. Yes, good idea -- keep fingers so busy that they can't reach for nummies! And maybe I could design a little protein shaker cosy -- LOL! ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
I'm in a group called the Society for Creative Anachronism, we are an educational, medieval re-creation group (we recreate the middle ages for fun) and there are MANY hobbies that are involved in this group. If you are interested, here is a link to the main site, you'll be able to check and see if there is a group in your area and read some of the info----it's very interesting and very FUN and keeps me very busy!!!! Other hobbies I have--quilting, sewing, cooking, baking, reading, gardening, cross stitch, remodeling and redecorating the house. http://www.sca.org :-) (the one in Cleveland) Hobbies and crafts.....yes it's related to wls! > So I've seen a lot of you say that to keep one busy it's good to get involved in a hobby or craft. Guest guest
Sherra, I started making dried flower arrangements about 15 years ago. I really was not very great at it in the beginning. Now, I make them for all occasions, on all types of materials. All my friends and family display them proudly in their homes. It really is a great stress remover, creating anything that brings beauty to others. I have also loved to cook during the holidays. I cook more healthy than the average population. Cooking though, can be dangerous if you keep it to yourself. Baked goods have always been loved as Christmas gifts to neighbors, friends and family. Guest guest
I too love to cook especially this time of year. My most favorite thing to do is bake. Last year I did a fair share of baking and donated the proceeds to a local fire department. This year I am baking for the cast of a Christmas play at my church. I have considered doing baking for the police department as well. Lately I' ve gotten into making natural cosmetics and bath products (which is a blast!) and candlemaking. I get bored so I like to keep trying new things. There's a whole bunch of things out there to try. And local craft stores usually have classes in things for not too much money or just the cost of the supplies. Just start experimenting until you find something you like! ) Sally 298 (BMI 49)/-142/156 Goal: 145-150ish lap RNY 7/10/02 Dr. Quinlin/Pittsburgh
Guest guest
Lyn, Wish you were closer! I would love to teach you! I knit, crochet, sew, ceremics, and have done just about anyother " homey " craft that is out there (except tatting, to tiny). I started doing this when I was 13. I taught for a couple of years and really enjoyed it. The challenge there was the lefties! Good thing I can do just about anything with both hands, LOL! Does keep your hands busy! Guest guest
I have two kids who bring home enough arts and crafts to last me a lifetime. Every now and then I'll do a needlepoint or something, but right now my hobby would be sitting down to read a good book all by myself. I really have to be in the mood to do the craft stuff and we do something at Brownies a few times a month, so I get my fill there. Also, every year at Christmas, I make my kids something special from me. One year I taught myself how to crochet three weeks before Christmas and made them each a blanket. One year I made hook rugs of Minnie and Mickey mouse as a rememberance of our trip to Disney that year. One year I made big puzzles of their then favorite characters and a piece in the middle of the puzzle the size of a picture came out and I put their pictures in the middle of it and matted and framed the puzzles and wrote a poem on the back of each frame for the kids. It's the only " crafty " thing I do all year, but its for the two most special people in my life and they know it comes from the heart. My son told me a few weeks ago that this is one of the things he looks forward to at Christmas, the special gift from mom. Talk about pressure. Still have no clue what I'm going to do this year, but then again, I work really well under pressure. Any suggestions? will be 11 in February and Leah was 7 in September. Thanks. Guest guest
Regina, What lovely, thoughtful gifts you give your children. Not only do they feel very special receiving them, but you are giving them an example of love that will be with them the rest of their lives. You are an amazing mother/woman. I'd love to hear what you come up with this year. May I live vicariously through you? Merry Christmas.
