brittle nails

My nails have started chipping, not just a little but a lot. I was

wondering if anyone else has this problem. I quit my protein drink

but I'm getting the same amount of protein with non-fat milk. I take

my vitamins religiously except for calcium. Could this be the

problem? I had my surgery 8-26-02. Thanks for the help.

Val,

I'm almost certain it's the fact you quit your protein shake AND your

calcium. Both are mandatory for good nails/hair, especially if you are

experiencing chipping. I had bad nails prior to surgery and up until I

finally got good with my supplements and protein. Milk protein is not the

same. Play around with your diet a little, try the shakes and calcium again

and I bet your nails not only get better, but you feel better too.

Could also be a zinc problem. My nails improved substantially when I

corrected my zinc deficiency. it can't be a good thing (she says ingenuously)

to

not be taking calcium although I have no idea if a deficiency would manifest in

brittle nails?? So it sure wouldn't hurt to run those labs and see what's

not cookin'. Lucille

Yes, this absolutely could be the problem. You need those protein shakes...3-5

per day.
