Guest guest
Cees, Something that also happens in Dermatomyositis is called a "mechanics hand rash". I've had it off and on for years. It wasn't till I got to Duke that it was recognized for what it was and pursued as a symptom of a connective tissue disease. It took another year after that to finally get confirmation that I actually have DM and begin treatment. There are many kinds of rashes and skin things that go along with various connective tissue/autoimmune conditions. It can be really frustrating to try and run it down but it is satisfying to finally have an accurate diagnosis. Guest guest
, Mechanics hand is pretty much just what it sounds like. When the rash was at it's worst my hands looked as though I had been working as a mechanic for 30 years. They were rough, calloused, scaly, peeling and above all they itched relentlessly. Nothing stopped the itch until I was put on steroids during my initial hospitalization. Once I was on the high doses of steroids the rash disappeared quickly and didn't reoccur until I had been off the prednisone for months. Here is a link to a photo that I found. At it's worst my rash looked much more severe than this picture but it definitely gives you a basic idea. http://dermatology.cdlib.org/1502/reviews/photoessay/61.jpg Beth Moderator Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 Dermatomyositis 11/08 To: Breathe-Support Sent: Sun, January 10, 2010 8:42:07 AMSubject: Re: Rash & difficulty swallowing What kind of rash is "mechanics hand rash"? Guest guest
Beth,Yuck! My rash didn't look that bad. Mine was red on the hands and when you touched it looked a normal color. Was very strange. Like I said on another post I watched the red rash spread on my hands. I was at a restaurant having dinner and sat watching it spread. It was so weird. To: Breathe-Support Sent: Sun, January 10, 2010 9:20:36 AMSubject: Re: Rash & difficulty swallowing , Mechanics hand is pretty much just what it sounds like. Guest guest
Cees Certainly rash is a part of Dermatomyositis. Also, in different ways you'll find skin issues with certain other conditions such as sarcoidosis and scleroderma. In my case, I do think dermatomyositis is ultimately a possibility but nothing confirms it at this point and to this point my rash remains dry skin. And the humidity here gets lower and lower. I didn't know that my hygrometer just registers down to 20% and then just starts saying LO%. But I recently found that out. > > Hi everyone, > > I don't pretend to know much about our various types of pulmonary fibrosis & related diseases, but I was doing some research lately & came across some info about issues that many of you have mentioned & asked questions about recently. > > I'm specifically referring to 2 in particular: > --a major rash on the hands & /or other body parts > --difficulty swallowing > > I keep running across mentions of both those things in people with Dermatomyositis (DM) [but NOT Polymyositis (PM)], especially ones who also have an interstitial lung disease.
