Guest guest
You may tolerate it better when your gut is healed up more, and in SCD yogurt, not a capsule. Yes, you may want to start with about 1/4 tsp if you are sensitive. The GI prostart is Lactobacilluc Cassei if that is more comfortable. Either could be true. You'll have to test further as you go to know definitively. > > Just don't want to wreck my gut any more than it already is. That's the idea here. > > Any help will certainly be appreciated and I know that I can not be starting probiotics right now that I should wait at least a couple weeks.....if I read everything right. Some people start right away - others wait to begin it. Use your instincts about what might be right for you and if you are very sensitive, you have the right idea to start tiny. Have you tried s. boulardii? It's another way of getting probiotics - it's a non colonizing yeast that eats other yeasts. Also, possibly, you can make yogurt using Fage Total Greek Yogurt as a starter, which just contains s. thermophilus and l. bulgaricus. And after there has been some healing, retest for acidophilus. Guest guest
,It might be entirely possible that you aren't reacting to the probiotic, but that it is doing it's job and some bad bacteria are dying off -- creating more toxins as they die and giving you increase die-off symptoms. If it were me, I would start the diet with the intro and wait on the probiotics for a few weeks before trying again with the SCD yogurt (all the lactose is eaten up during fermentation). Try only a small (like 1/8 tsp) of the yogurt, wait a few days and see what reaction you get. If it goes well, increase as tolerated. My question is can a person be allergic to just Lactobacillus Acidophilus ? Or is this what a person with such an out of whack gut will experience and they need to start small and go very slow ? Just don't want to wreck my gut any more than it already is. I am not taking it since starting the diet but it doesn't seem to do anything. How many did you take and did you take it more than an hour after eating food and at least 1/2 hour - an hour before eating anything else? Did you up the dose to several (not all at once, but slowly?) If you do it all at once, you are likely to experience uncomfortable die off. Guest guest
This has been my experience with L. Acidophilus supplements and yogurt. My experience is similar to many others on SCD, so you’re not alone in having difficulties getting probiotics during the early stages of SCD. I had a somewhat severe immune response to L. Acidophilus supplements and yogurt for the first 4 months on SCD, so I did without probiotics. I would try a tiny amount once every 3 to 4 weeks until finally I didn’t break out in hives or have trouble breathing. Then I slowly increased the amount to either a capsule of L. Acidophilus or a teaspoon of dripped yogurt, but I stayed at the once a week dosage. So it took me weeks to advance to a full capsule of L. Acidophilus or a teaspoon of dripped yogurt. I tried both, hoping that my body would pick one or the other to stop reacting to, but that didn’t occur. Anyway, I then slowly increased my frequency of taking a probiotic over months. I stopped using a supplement in favor of dripped yogurt (I worked up to about 1/3 c. of yogurt per day) for about 6 months. I had been lactose intolerant for many years before SCD, so it was a treat to have dairy again. Unfortunately after the 6 months of regular use of dripped yogurt (never did add cheese back into my diet because I was fighting a candida overgrowth at the time) my body developed a sensitivity to casein (severe, debilitating, systemic joint pain) so I had to stop the yogurt and just take a supplement. Which worked fine unless I had a capsule more often than twice a week. So it took me months for my body to tolerate probiotics, and I ended up needing to stop eating yogurt and stay on a supplement. And my maintenance dose of probiotics is still fairly small; one capsule every 3 to 4 days unless I’m on antibiotics. It is certainly OK to not take probiotics during the first few months on SCD. Sometimes we have to get through some initial healing before our bodies will tolerate the bacterial strains. And then we have to learn whether our bodies tolerate yogurt better than a supplement, or vice versa. And then there are several variations of yogurt to try, in case one form is better tolerated than another. The probiotics are important to our healing, but our bodies have to be strong enough to accept them. So don’t worry. Just stop trying the probiotics for a few weeks, then try a tiny amount. If it is still not tolerated, just stop trying for another few weeks. If it is, then slowly, slowly increase the size and frequency of the dose. Kim M. If I was allergic to lactobacillus acidophilus then the symptoms I have would continue and not go away as opposed to if I am not allergic then the symptoms should get better after a few days ? week? longer? S. boulardi I can take with no problems at all. I am not taking it since starting the diet but it doesn't seem to do anything. About the SCD yogurt ........ are people who are lactose intolerant able to eat the SCD yogurt ? Just wish I knew a sure fire way to know how to go about this.....I tried just the tip of a teaspoon of lactobacillus acidophilus for three nights and my symptoms increase. So I am starting with the smallest amount I can and still having problems. Anyway I will spend a few weeks on the diet without probiotics then pursue this further. When I do start though is the yogurt better to start with than pill probiotic ? Thanks for the help,
