Hello. Not sure if I can help but I will try. I am 13 days post op

fromm upper and lower jaw surgery. Top was widened 4mm and the bottom

was brought forward 8mm. My OS told me that I had a good chance of a

relapse with that much of a move so he put extra screws in from the

outside. Now when he lined up my teeth he lined them up on top of

each other as he told me they would go back just a little to where

they should be so I am guessing that what you are having is normal.

But if it worries you to much you could always call the OS Office and

ask. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I would call your surgeon right away and tell him/her what you've told

us here. Yes, relapse is possible, at any time. But surgeons also

sometimes over-correct, in order to compensate for a little bit of

expected relapse. That might be what you are experiencing, but hey,

I'm no expert, so you should definitely ask your surgeon.

If it is relapse, sometimes they can go back in and work on the jaws

before they are fully healed. Other times, they wait until after

you've recovered. Relapse is not common, but you do tend to hear more

about it on these sites because of the nature of a support group.

Again, please call your surgeon. He/she gets the big bucks to answer

these questions.

Hope that helps,

Hi Gemma,

I'm almost five months post-op I saw my orthodontist last week and she said that

i'm having a relapse. She put bands on to help prevent any further movement. I

Has anybody else had these worries?

The reason I'm worrying is because my lower jaw has retreated a bit.

At first, when I had my wafer out, it met my top jaw straight on, I

knew this was wrong and it needed to go back a bit, but now I'm scared

it's going too far back. Is three weeks post-op too soon to be

relapsing? Is there anything I can do to prevent relapse happening? I

will ask my Orthodontist, but I'm not seeing her for another week and

thought I'd ask you lot.

Thanks for any info given - greatly received.

I'd say call your surgeon, today, and explain just what you've

explained to us.

There are some -- a few -- people who have known from the moment they

awakened out of surgery taht the bite was wrong, and have gone into

relapse. Those are a very few. Most of us worry, and generally things

settle down and are ok, or get straightened out by the ortho later on

with elastics and other devices.

But why risk it? If a second surgery is needed, the doc may want to do

it before the bones really start to heal. It never hurts to ask!

Probably you need not worry. But if you do, better to find out about it

sooner, rather than later.

I agree with Cammie and call your OS as soon as possible.

No, 3 weeks is not early for relapsing post op. My teeth started to

relapse immediately after surgery which ended up causing an overbite

and crossbite. My OS placed bands on the teeth which immediately

corrected the problem.

The early the better in correcting the relapsing before the bones

harden from surgery. My OS informed me that there was an open window

after surgery to correct these problems. Once that window closes,

you risk a second surgery.
