I am 24 and I am having my upper and lower jaw surgically expanded on

Nov.4th. I know that this will create a gap between my front teeth.

Can anyone tell me how big this gap gets and how quickly it will

close? Also, will I speak with a lisp due to the expanders in my

mouth? Has anyone ever been unhappy with the results of their surgery

and are the changes to the face obvious? I know I have a lot of

questions so I'll with those. Thanks.

Hi, I had an upper expansion done 3 years ago. I was very happy with

the results of the surgery - I had a really narrow upper jaw and it

was so nice to have nice wide upper teeth - not wide,

but enough so my tongue fits in the roof of my mouth, where it didn't

before. I was always biting my tongue and lisped.

I had my jaw widened 1 cm, but the gap was not quite that big - but

big enough - let me tell you, about the size of one of my front

teeth! Be prepared psychologically for the gap, I thought it wouldn't

be a big deal but I was very self-conscious. I didn't get braces put

on the upper teeth until 4 months after I had the surgery, and the gap

didn't close until 4-5 months after (I think, I can't remember exactly

how long it took).

I had the expander put in 1-week before the surgery and it drove me

nuts for that week - but I got very used to it after that. Your

tongue kind of goes nuts with something new in your mouth, but you

will get used to it. You will have a hard time talking with it in at

first, and then you adjust pretty quickly.

As far as a change to my face - well.....it will possibly widen your

nose. Mine has widened - although, to be quite honest with you, I

didn't even notice it until a year and a half later - it is such a

gradual change, and I notice but I'm looking at before and after

pictures with a magnifying glass, I don't think anyone else has even

noticed. It will also give you a 'fuller' face, which, again....is

common sense since you are changing your jaw - but this isn't a bad

thing and is not extremely obvious to people.

Well...those are my experiences, I hope it was helpful to you. (By

the way, I didn't have my lower jaw widened).

Oh, baby... Has anyone ever been unhappy with results?

Sure. Quite a few.

That's not to say that you will, or you won't. But it's an unfair

question to ask.

Don't do it if you don't need it. If you do need it, you'll be

finding results after.

There are no guarantees in these procedures, as in most of life.

Sorry. Pam gave you good answers, I think, about some of the

frustrations you may encounter.

But I wish you the best results, which are the most usual.
