Guest guest
Sometimes when we eat something too advanced (like lentils or whatever he ate that disturbed him) it can create a problem that lasts for a while until the healing resolves. SCD is kind of an individual learn as you go - and since the learning takes place in our bodies and through how we feel, the lessons kind of stick. (Except when we do something silly, and we all do.) I'm eating lots of lentils now, and its all fine (at the moment - you never know) - but I'm 31/3 years into SCD. I think I tried them once late in my first year - determined they were a no go area. No how, no where. And didn't try them again for another six months or so. Still no good. So I just started eating them over the summer - and now they are no problem. Also sometimes things depend on the rest of the state of your gut. For instance, I was eating legal kidney beans last winter - I had this delicious provencal tomato and bean gratin recipe (the recipe called for illegal beans, but I just subbed legal ones and soaked them for like 36 hours. ) No problems. Then, a month or two ago, I again had legal kidney beans and they caused a reaction. So I froze the rest of that meal and ate the rest of it this week - no problem. My point with this latter example is that even when we are further along, there can be minor glitches and ups and downs. I guess something else was going on in my gut that week and the combo caused a reaction, or maybe I was just being more reactive than I am at this point. As you can see, a lot of this is guesswork, even when we've been doing this for a while. Since he is on prednisone, it's a good bet that he has a yeast overgrowth going on, since pred. raises the blood sugar level - which yeast love - and that could be contributing to the gas problems. I would suggest trying some s. boulardii, which is a non colonizing yeast that eats other pathogenic yeast and helps to resolve these situations. If you are interesting in pursuing, look up boulardii at netnutri.com. Mara > My husband is still being bothered with gas. He is doing the epson salt baths, it helps. The peppermint tea,it helps. But, out question is if he is not eating anything new . same old foods , not nut flours anything like that. Its not that hes sick and in bed. Just sometimes weak I think from not eating enough carbs. At this pt. he can't. and the gas issue. Is this a normal part of getting better . He is going to bathroom quite a bit. no D. Guest guest
I ate something a few weeks back that gave me gas, bloating and constipation for three weeks. I am learning for my body it takes a long time to resolve even if I haven't eaten that food for some time. Frustrating, I know. Guest guest
Another possibility is that he is still eating a food that isn’t tolerated as well by his digestion. In other words, his digestion still can’t cope with one of the foods that doesn’t cause a reaction within a day or two but does so after eating it over several weeks. Sometimes our digestions can cope with a particular food once, but then needs a week or two or three before it can handle a second serving. Can you list the foods he’s eating right now, the ones you thought he was handling OK? There might be one or two in the list that some or all of us have experienced problems with. Otherwise, you might fall back to even safer foods for him, and see if you can figure out which food isn’t tolerated. Also check that there are no hidden illegals in the meats or other foods you’re using. As your husband’s gut ecology improves, especially if he is tolerating yogurt or a SCD-legal probiotic supplement already, then he should find his digestion tolerating more foods and perhaps eating some foods more frequently. It does take time (months, if not years) to heal our guts, so for a while we have to stick to our safe foods. Kim M. Guest guest
Try taking the veggies out for a while and then slowly introduce them. I get terrible gas from veggies. In fact they are one of the things I can not really do at all. I manage a small portion of green leaves about one a week. Any more than that and I am bloated and farting all day and night for at least 2 -3 days after. pip Scd/ july 2010 > > > > Another possibility is that he is still eating a food that isn't tolerated > > as well by his digestion. Guest guest
I'm wondering, RE this night discomfort, just when he is eating late in the day. I know with myself, I have to finish dinner by 8:00. I have half a banana with my bedtime pills (because I cannot take pills without a little something or they sit there like rocks in my stomch), but if I eat heavier food later than 8:00, I will be awake half hte night, discomfort, gas, bloaating, wild nighmares when I do sleep. And then a Bad Day the next day, my gut gets really annoyed with me. I know some of us need a good substantial bedtime snack to sleep well but it's sure the opposite for me. So he might experiment with when he eats things to see if it makes a difference. oh, yes KIM he is eating chicken soup with soft green beans (very soft and well cut up, avacado , meat loaf with winter squash , steak and mushrooms , green peppers all very well roasted, roasted chicken, cooked liver, tuna salad with scd mayo and boil egg. thats really about it and the yogurt and honey.
