Hi Dany

When I had my surgery done 3 and half months ago I was living in

Manhattan. I had my surgery done by Dr. Sachs www.nycoms.com.

He was excellent. He has an office in Manhattan and two in Long

Island where I was operated at Long Island Jewish Hospital. Dr. Sachs

operates also at Cornell in NYC. My orthodontist was Dr.

Diamond who has an office in Manhattan on East 61st between Park and

Lex and an office in Long Island. Both doctors were FANTASTIC with me

and I attribute the easy ride I had of the whole orthognathic surgery

journey to them. Dr. Sachs was always honest, truthful and upfront

with me but most of all very caring and I am super pleased with the

results of my new bite. Dr. Diamond has so far managed to stick to

his promise of keeping me in braces for no longer than 6 months pre-

op (I was actaully ready after only 4 months) and 6 months post-op.

Fingers crossed I get my braces off in a month and a half.

Feel free to email me at sararegine@... if you want more info.

Sara

I will be seeing Drs. Goldsmith and Brent Orentlicher for my surgery in

November. They are based in Scarsdale, and I believe they do the surgery at a

hospital in

White plains. They are a surgical team, and have been doing jaw surgeries

together for the

last 25 years. In fact, Dr. Goldsmith invented some of the technology/machinery

used in

jaw surgeries all over. You can do a google search for their number in

Scarsdale, and if you

call, please ask to talk to Sue: she is awesome and patient and will answer all

your

questions. Tell her Jen in Vermont says hi :)

Also, and it's just my opinion, because I have no idea what your personal

situation is, but

if I didn't have functional problems, I would NEVER be doing this for aesthetic

reasons

alone. It's just so damned risky, and really sets you back for a little while.

If you can fix the

problem with braces alone, you are one lucky person, and I'd recommend trying

the braces

first. If they don't work, you can always opt for surgery then ... you'll

probably need the

braces for surgery anyway, so you may as well start with the most conservative

approach.

Just my opinion :)

Best of luck,

Jen

Dany, here's another recommendation for you:

I live in Manhattan and had upper jaw surgery (lefort 1) 5 weeks ago

at Beth Israel, by Dr. Alan Schwimmer. The resident Antipov is a

great doctor as well. And they're both really nice guys. I took my

time making a decision (met with 4 surgeons) and when I met Schwimmer

it was settled.

Anyway, the surgery and recovery went very well and a couple of

friends who are ent's said he did excellent work. My orthdontist

thought so too. Just thought I'd give you another option. Send me an

email if you have questions because I'm not checking this site every

day.

Hi Jen,

thanks so much for the dr's info.

For the treatment options, I totally agree with you -- i am a bit

scared at the idea of the surgery myself, and would much prefer

going for braces only. But as it appears - if i do choose to go for

braces only it would be a totally different treatment: my pb is that

i have a lower jaw that is a little bigger than my upper so as i was

growing up, my lower teeth compensated for this by tilting inwards --

so now my teeth touch (no void despite the underbite) but as i

understand it this is likely to cause periodontal issues down the

line (Don't know how much of a real issue this is - but that's what

my ortho says). a treatment that prepares for surgery would

straighten the teeth so that the jaws can be moved later -- but this

would worsen my underbite; whereas a " braces only solution " would

take out a couple of teeth in the lower jaw to relieve some

overcrowding, and try to push the upper teeth a little outward so as

to cover the lower teeth. Not sure if/how it works exactly - this is

appearantly a much longer treatment (3 yrs at least). ultimately, i

probably will try this first as you said and then - if it does not

work - go for surgery - but want to first get all the facts, see if

the treatments can be complementary, and get as many opinions as

possible before choosing.... (plus, you guys all make the surgery

seem so easy - it's tough to make a decision!!! :))

Thanks again

best
