Guest guest
Hello friends, I have recently been having a hard time taking my chelated zinc. I am trying to take 100mg/day in order to keep my immune system in check. Well, I have been vomiting after taking it in the morning. I don't eat a lot of breakfast, but am sure to take it right after eating. Usually I have my protein drink first thing. Then about an hour later I have a very small bowl of cereal w/3-4 TBS of flaxmeal. I think I take about 1/3 cup of cereal. Also, I am taking only 1/2 a tablet which is only about 25 mg. This is a recent event. I had been taking it w/o problems. I also take 1/2 at lunch w/ a thick protein shake and usually some kind of sliced meat & cheese. (Just a couple of slices to balance the sweet of the shake). It never is a problem at night w/dinner and I take a whole 50mg then. I am taking Puritan's Pride Zinc gluconate 50mg. Any thoughts/similar experiences/suggestions for change. I know I could eat more, but really don't want to. Thanks, Diane LAP RNY 9/
Guest guest
Diane, I consulted my vitamin Bible, called The Vitamin Book, and this is a little quote from this book about zinc under the " Toxicity " column: " Zinc can have some adverse effects, although it is not as toxic as some other minerals. Doses larger than 200 mg have caused vomiting in adults, and higher doses can lead to dehydration, stomach pains, poor muscle coordination, tiredness, and kidney failure. High-dose zinc supplements should be taken only for a short time and only for a specific purpose. " BTW, the RDA for zinc is 15 mg, increased to 20 mg for pregnant women and 25 mg for nursing mothers. So, in addition to that 100 mg/day that you're supplementing, I'm wondering if you happen to be absorbing far more from your food than you think you are. At any rate, it looks like your body is trying to tell you something. in NJ **************************** > Hello friends, > I have recently been having a hard time taking my chelated zinc. Guest guest
Are you taking this as a precautionary measure or because your zinc measures low? I personally take 200mg a day, 50mgX 4. But that holds my zinc level at perfection and has for 8 yrs. Zinc CAN be upsetting, but if you're only taking part of a pill (25mg), and not on empty, I'm surprised. What happens if you skip a whole day? Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
, Thanks so much for the good info. It looks like I should be consulting The Vitamin Book before playing w/my vitamins. I thought that since zinc comes in lozenges, etc., for colds that it would be fine. I agree that my body must be trying to tell me something. I will back off for awhile. I don't recall my zinc levels on the last labs, but will dig them out also. It may not have been tested because my last PCP knew absolutely nothing about what should be tested. I haven't gotten a new PCP here in San since I moved. I began the zinc because I've had 2 colds in the last 4 months since moving here and wanted to get my immune system stronger for winter and the flue season. Thanks again for the help. That is why I started here w/my question. Guest guest
I was taking the zinc as a precautionary measure. I don't know what my last labs said, but I'm going to go look them up. I am going to a new doc here since I moved and will get labs again soon if possible. Sometimes when I skip a day I still vomit and sometime I don't. It is very brief and I'm fine in a couple minutes. This has only recently started. I'm tired of going through it. Apparently I don't need so much. Guest guest
Oh, you're very welcome. But, I seem to remember something about zinc not normally being tested because it's a very expensive test, or something like that. Someone on here may remember. But, I'm a firm believer in zinc lozenges. Every time I feel a cold coming on, I start on the Cold-Eeze, every 2-3 hours, and within a day, it kills the cold! The stuff is amazing! in NJ ****************** >I don't recall my zinc levels on the last labs, but will dig them out also. Guest guest
Zinc chelated gluconate is not a true chelate. In a cheated supplement, minerals are combined with amino acid molecules through a special manufacturing process. See http://www.albionlabs.com/human/Newsletter/2000August.pdf You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file. It can be downloaded free from http://www.adobe.com If product claims that is it " chelated " , it is using the word " chelated " is a very loose sense, i.e., a mineral has been combined with another substance. That substance is seldom an amino acid molecule, nor is the necessary manufacturing methodology used. It is just marketing hype. Zinc can cause nausea. About 5% of my customers used to comment on experiencing mild nausea after taking my multivitamin product. Since we have reduced the zinc from 25 mg per capsule to 15 mg per capsule, we have not had a complaint. 100 mg a day of zinc is a lot. The FDA RDI is 15 mg, so you are taking 666% of the RDI. You might reduce the nausea by spreading the doses out to 4 a day. I would suggest that you verify with your doctor that you need that much zinc.
