Guest guest
I am in Australia and Pecan nuts just aren't commonly available here. Well, as opposed to saying what isn't commonly available, why not tell us which nuts you do have access to, and then folks can offer their opinions on them. <g> I just discovered a friend of mine in Perth is deathly allergic to Pecans. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Guest guest
I tolerate Almond nut butter and was intending to now make Brazil nut butter. However, I have just read posts about only having 1 Brazil nut a day due to their Selenium content. That's a good question. I didn't know this, and I recently made banana muffins with at least half brazil nut butter, and I usually eat two muffins a day. I always felt I was getting a little too much of something; they seemed really rich and had kind of a funny taste that didn't quite agree with me. If I were you, I'd try cashews next. Guest guest
As we know, each of us is different, however, after 6 years on SCD I tried cashew butter for the first time last week and got serious gas and cramping from it. Start off trying just a small amount. If I were you, I'd try cashews next. Love that suggestion :-) Cashews, here I come!
Guest guest
Okay, I know what it's like to get too many opinions so hopefully you won't get overwhelmed.... BUT... Peanuts and cashews are legumes (not technically nuts) and some say that they have failed on SCD from eating these. I am not basing this on any personal experience, just what I've read. I've actually been too scared to try them! -Joanna

Guest guest
Well there you go- I shouldn't go around spreading urban legends, huh? <g> Thanks Marilyn! -Joanna > OTOH, the idea that one can fail on SCD from > using peanut butter didn't exist when I started, > and peanut butter brownies worked just fine for > me, even though I came to prefer pecan brownies. > > > — Marilyn

Thanks in advance for any ideas as to which Nut Butter I should move on to as I now tolerate Almond butter. Hazelnuts have been used by some of the folks on the UK list in the past, and also by folks on Pecanbread, but those are, naturally, your most expensive nut. My inclination would be to try walnuts. I've made walnut bread before, and it's good, but a bit heavy for my personal taste. I haven't tried hazelnuts. I don't know... peanut butter brownies were all the rage when I was first on the lists, and most people had more trouble with lots of honey in them than with the peanut butter itself. I've been threatening to try some peanut butter and cheese bread, but I buy the peanut butter, and then I eat it before I get around to the experiment. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Great point- my nephews are ASD and one of them LITERALLY will only eat 4 foods. One of them happens to be peanut butter!!!! > > Actually, where the problem with peanut butter > comes from is the fact that ASD kids very often > have an issue with peanuts. Guest guest
And start off with just a tiny nibble. I never knew I had nut allergies, but when I tried a tiny nibble of cashew butter, I ended up in the ER. Very glad I didn't eat more then a nibble. For your brazil nuts, you can throw a few of them in with one of the other nuts so that you don't get overloaded on selenium. I used to make pecan/brazil nut butter. I'm about to set off on a 4 day nut rotation :-). I feel like my almond allergy is getting a little stronger, and don't want to lose them. I had a Peanut Butter Cookie Lara Bar the other day (advanced on SCD), and it seemed to go okay. I had my first ever macadamia nut just a little while ago, and *knock on wood* I'm still breathing. So I'm going to do almond, peanut butter, pecan, macadamia nut, rinse and repeat. Hopefully that will keep my allergies at bay. Guest guest
I wish! I've been trying to get my sister to slowly transition (they actually live in town). The challenge is getting her younger guy on it. I can tell he's got gut issues, but he's the one who only eats 4 foods. And besides the peanut butter, none are SCD legal. He has such intense sensory issues that he won't go near any other food. Her struggle is figuring out how to break the cycle. Does she put him on meds to ease the anxiety so that he might try something new which in turn would make his diet better and get him off the meds? I am not actually looking for an answer, just posing the question She is going to start by doing GFCF and see if she can't trick him with some similar looking foods. It's a start!!! -Joanna > Are they on SCD? Guest guest
Me too Mara, but I think that is a candida thing. I once read that a great test to find out if you have a candida problem is to eat a tablespoon of peanut butter and wait a couple hours. Confirms it for me every time! > > > Great point- my nephews are ASD and one of them LITERALLY will only eat 4 foods. Guest guest
My memory - and my taste buds - tell me that cashews have more carbs than walnuts, pecans, and other nuts. Hazelnuts taste a little sweet, too... mmmmmmmm Artful Carol > > As we know, each of us is different, however, after 6 years on SCD I tried cashew butter for the first time last week and got serious gas and cramping from it.
