Guest guest
I'm sorry to hear you've had no luck with solving your particular problem. Could you give us some idea where you live so that someone could perhaps recommend their own surgeon? Most of us have had good results. I'm also wondering how you came to have this problem? It sounds like you had an accident. > Is there a real doctor out there that can help me get all these > pieces of broken bone out of my upper jaw and lip. Guest guest
Hi In reply to your note, I am living in Medford, Wisconsin. And, no I didn't have an accident. I had my upper teeth taken out in 1998 and ever sense then I have had nothing but problems. I got my denture and that bothered me so bad I had to stop useing it. So, I went to doctor after doctor to get help with the problem and no one wanted to see anything until just lately when they saw a 4mm piece of bone. But when I was in for surgery a week ago they some how forgot to check for this piece of bone and found a piece of root and a very small piece of bone which measured maybe a 1/16 of an inch. When I went in for my follow-up appointment on Tuesday, the doctor more or less told me there was nothing else he could do and would recommend me to another oral surgeon. That bothered me because why see another one when the one you are seeing should be able to tell you the same as the other one. Just can't figure these darn doctors out now days. Anyway, thanks for your reply...........Jean > > Is there a real doctor out there that can help me get all these > > pieces of broken bone out of my upper jaw and lip. Guest guest
I'm nowhere near Wisconsin, but I think if I were you, I would at least check out the nearest dental school. (I also would not have a problem having dental students look at my mouth, or work on me, as long as they were supervised. If you do, that's a legitimate issue, of course, and find another way.) I would tell them, big time, that I'd been through doc after doc, and the unhappy results. Not so much as to make them scared that you're a neurotic complainer, but enough to let them know you've been around the block and are serious about needing expert help. If that path does not suit you, for whatever reason, I'd start asking friends and family about oral surgeons they've had experience with. Almost everybody has a teen or someone else in the family who's needed extraction of wizzies or some other procedure. Talk a lot. You need a fine oral surgeon, and an expert at dentures. I'm not telling you that dentures will ever be comfortable; the experience of those I know and love is that they're always second- best. You might also investigate the possibility of at least some implants. They're pricey as the dickens, but it's a lot easier to stabilize things if you have at least some anchors in there. I do think that's unbelievable -- not that I don't believe you -- that the doctor " forgot " to look for what he'd told you was there. Perhaps a letter from a lawyer might prompt him to remember, especially if you can document the diagnosis, and offer you a second effort. Although I'm not sure I'd want such a doctor working on me again. Have you seen the second guy he recommended? Might be worth a visit, but I'd make it a point to say, if it's true, that the doctor told you he " forgot " to look for this piece of bone. And everything in the mouth feels enormous, I know. But remember that 4 mm is less than a quarter of an inch. I have a little " horn " on the labial side of my lower jaw. My surgeon says it is a bone fragment working its way toward the surface, since I had surgery in 2002. It has not moved perceptibly since then. Best, C. > Hi > In reply to your note, I am living in Medford, Wisconsin. And, no I > didn't have an accident. Guest guest
Hi Jean, That's too bad, that your surgery didn't solve the problem. I would take your doctor's advice, though, and seek out another surgeon. Would your surgeon give you a referral to another? Doctors are only human, they can't solve everything, and they sometimes do make mistakes. I've never met a perfect doctor, although I think I've had some pretty good ones (and knew when I had a not-so-good one, although I didn't think I had other options at the time). It's unfortunate that you didn't get it solved this time around, but I hope you'll try to stay positive and give it another go. What do you have to lose at this point? > > > Is there a real doctor out there that can help me get all these > > > pieces of broken bone out of my upper jaw and lip. Guest guest
Hi Jean, I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the Milwaukee area, there's a dental school at Marquette University. Another place I can think of is Medical College of Wisconsin which has Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department. I know Milwaukee is a long way from Medford but you may want to look into these two places if you can't find anybody in your area. I'm still pre-op so I can't tell you much about my surgeon except he's very nice and always willing to answer my questions and concerns. He has offices in Cudahy and Mequon.
