Guest guest
, I'm 4 months post op from upper jaw surgery, my jaw has started to relapse so I now have to wear bands to try and prevent any further movement and damage. I too hope that I won't have to go through it all again! __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hi , I'm just 8 weeks post-op and I'm so afraid of the replapse thing myself. I had upper jaw surgery and prior to this my open bite was caused by my tongue thrusting forward. Did you have this problem? I KNOW that it's still thrusting even though my Ortho said that it shouldn't now. I have an appointment with him this Thursday to find out about seeing a specialist. This is one thing that I don't want to cause a replapse because I dread having to go through another surgery. How did they know you had movement? Did they just do an X- ray? What other kind of symptoms do you have? I'm clenching really bad at night now and 2 weeks ago this wasn't happening. ~Desperate for answers... ~Delaine > , > > I'm 4 months post op from upper jaw surgery, my jaw has started to relapse so I now have to wear bands to try and prevent any further movement and damage. Guest guest
Hi , What happened at your Dr. appt. about your lower jaw moving back? Mine has too. I was so happy after my surgery that I wasn't wired, now I'm wondering if it would have been better to wire it all in place. I seem to have to push my lower jaw forward to fit into the splint. Its 11.30am and my appt is at 4.20pm. > > > I would like to know if anyone else that has had lower jaw > surgery > > has > > > ever had to have it re done? > > > My surgeon has told me that sometimes they go back too far after > > > surgery and they need to re do it all over again. Guest guest
Hi Pam and Fran, Well my Doctor is absolutly wrapped about how I am going. He explain to me that He is not worried about my jaw going back as they are more concerned about my bite at this stage than the jaw as they can fix that with the braces later on. He says that the perfect bite is not always what our expectation is in the way of both top and bottom jaw been completly on top of each other and front teeth touching. He also explain to me that if you look at most peoples mouths, the front jaw its usually a little bit forward from the bottom jaw. I have to see him weekly at the moment and also the orthodontist because they keep changing my bands according to my bite to make sure I continue with the right bite. As your swelling goes down, your bite keeps changing so that why they need to keep seeing you to make sure they get it right. They are concerned because they had to cut twice on the right side that my bite will go toward the left side so I have to make sure I keep the right side of my mouth straight for at least another 2 weeks. He said that after 4 weeks the bone has fused together and you have little chance of the jaws moving, but if in the first 4 weeks your bite its not perfect, the chances of something going wrong are greater, thus the fact of having weekly appts with both of them for the next 4 weeks. He also explained that you should not have anything hard to eat for 4 weeks until the bone fuses, as for eating through a syringe, he seems to think that you should get use to moving your jaw around as soon as possible and that because you get use to eating normally you have less chances of loosing weight and getting better alot faster. Any way overall He was impressed with the swelling and my jaw line.I have a slight crooked nose which he seem to think has to do with the more swelling on the right side than on the left and once all the swelling goes away it will be ok. I hope so as its the first thing everyone notices now. So for now, I have to keep my bands on and keep eating mashed up food for another 2 weeks. As for the numbness, He could not advise me as He says every one is different and the feeling comes back at different times, so no joy there. Pam I asked him about your jaw moving back and that you have a splint, He told me that your doctor should be monitoring that very closely and that they will be putting bands in your mouth to fix it. Not too stress to much about it at the moment, but He said you should contact your doctor and make an appt for him to have a look so He can make the right choice for your situation. When do you see your doctor next? I am more relaxed now, I will have a good sleep tonight. Keep smilling:):) > > > I would like to know if anyone else that has had lower jaw > surgery > > has > > > ever had to have it re done? > > > My surgeon has told me that sometimes they go back too far after > > > surgery and they need to re do it all over again. Guest guest
Hi , Sounds like your doctor has a good handle on your situation. I am glad you are relieved. That was a good explanation about the first four weeks post op too. I will keep that in mind when my turn comes around. Will watch for your posts in the next two weeks too. Good luck with this! Guest guest
HI Delaine, I was born with a cleft lip and palate and as a result my upper jaw stopped growing which resulted in needing jaw surgery. They were able to tell with the position of the jaw and my bite. I have had many infections post-op which could have played a part in this. I also had more pain and swelling. Sorry for the late reply but I have got yet another infection and it's the worst one so far! --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
