Guest guest
I had the NG tube even after I woke up for a little while, evidently. They told me they would give me amnesia medication, and evidently they did because I don't remember a thing. My anesthesiologist told me that they leave it in for a while because with the type of surgery that we all have done, they can't just crack our mouths open and stick a tube down our throats if they need to. He said they like to make sure that the people are breathing well. If you're very concerned, voice your opinions. My doctor's didn't want it in as long but let me tell you this. They had to keep an oxygen monitor on me to measure my oxygen levels because after the surgery for some reason I would decide not to breathe or to just take shallow breaths. I think a large part was due to the anesthesia and morphine. Anyway, an alarm kept sounded and my husband and the nurses would keep telling to breathe. If I had a tube in that wouldn't have happened. Just letting you know. Also, they should have you hooked to a morphine drip that you control yourself. It not only helps with the pain but helps to mellow you. You can't overdose yourself because it only has so many meds within a certain period of time. My point is, if the tube is painful or scary to you now, it probably won't be at the time in your semi unconscious state with all meds on board. Hope this helps relieve some anxiety. I was scared to death of the urinary catheter but was so thankful they left it in because then I didn't have to try to get up, and it wasn't bad when they took it out. I just peed weird for the next couple of days. Sorry to go on for so long. You'll do good. We're all a lot stronger than we think we are.
