Guest guest
Dear Carol., I dont have any answer to your problem, but can empathize with you. I am having a recurring problem with very painful sores in my nostrils. When I am placed on antibiotics for at least 10 or more days, this completely clears up.. only to return again and again.. I have been to my primary care doc, my allergist and my ENT guy.. all of whom really dont have a clue.. I have now been battling this problem since last Nov.. 2002.. I hope you get the answers you are looking for soon.. Take care Peachy hugs,
Guest guest
Carol, When I was a teen, I had eaten a ton of oranges and I started to itch. Little red dots were everywhere. I was so scared I hid in my room for 2 days lol. Oranges weren't a part of my diet (my mom had just bought some on sale) and I was only 12 so I never saw that reaction again. Fast forward to 16ish. I begin to start taking vitamins, cause that is the " thing " to do ya know. Well it was an every day old vitamin. I noticed over time my lips inside ended up cankor sores and all cut up like they had been sliced inside. I had no clue it was an allergic reaction to the vitamins so I just kept taking them. My lips grew huge. My mom made me stop taking everything and go back to like soups and stuff and I eventually healed up. Several years later I try it again, but this time I work for a pharmacy. The pharmacist told me that some vitamins that are made cheaply have cheap forms of vit c in it and can cause a reaction. I never thought of myself having citrus reactions. So I was scared to take vitamins for years. Didn't matter what I tried dept store wise, I would get canker sores. Back then, GNC wasn't really well known or other health food stores that got more quality made vitamins. I had a friend from amway sell me some vitamims and I thought I'd humor him. I tried them, had no problems over a year. Stopped taking them for awhile cause it wasn't my habit. Then when I got this surgery, I did the " flintstone " thing and within 3 days (alot quicker than the other ones), BAM, there went my lips and cankor sores. So I think I nailed MY problem anyway with my allergic reactions to vitamins and the way some are processed. I have had to try all sorts of vitamins to figure out what ones I could take. Not saying that is what happened to you. But it was my experience and the root of my problem with similiar side effects. Good luck in figuring it out. Another thing, are you post menopausal? Or however you say that? I seem to remember my mom saying something about sores when she stopped having her periods. Dunno maybe something to look into if that is your age bracket. Guest guest
I don't have an answer Carol. But I have had a similar problem. My dentist said " are you taking any medications? " I said yes and he said " Well they are probably causing them. " Great. No solutions ... just a probably cause. Do you get a " fat lip " with yours sometimes too? I do. And the worse part is that I have trouble talking sometimes and I am a teacher. I have a friend who puts salt on those things. OUCHHHHHHHH I am afraid to try that. I used to use ... now get ready to shudder Absorbine Jr. Yes, it hurts like crazy when you apply it (at night I would do it) but in the morning the sores would be gone. But those were for sores inside my cheek not the ones on my lips. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). My dentist recommends Glyoxide. I keep a little bottle handy just in case I need it. The generic works just fine too. I hope this will help you. Guest guest
Carol, I attempted to reply to this late last night, and Yahoo ate my post... I get so tired of posting via the web! I'm going to try again. Perhaps you have contracted oral herpes. The symptoms you report, the recurrences, and the things that do and don't help all sound about right. You could have your doctor culture the material in one of the sores, but that's tricky in your mouth, and can be painful. Better still is to have them do the blood test for herpes, which can and will also reveal (if you have herpes) whether it's type 1 ( " oral " ) or type 2 ( " genital " ) -- I put those words in quotes because viruses don't always follow these rules and both kinds are found in both areas these days. I've had type 2 since I was 19 (17 years now) and found some relief in acyclovir taken as soon as outbreaks make themselves known. That makes the sores less contagious, causes you to have fewer of them, and makes those that do erupt heal more quickly. There's also an acyclovir cream but I've never tried it and I don't know if it can be used orally. I am one of the unlucky people that has very frequent outbreaks, so I am much happier on daily Valtrex, which is similar to acyclovir but more long-lasting. Instead of monthly or more often outbreaks, I now have about one a year. There's some evidence that Valtrex also decreases viral shedding (times when you are shedding contagious viral particles without any noticeable sores), which can help keep you from " sharing " it with others. Some people have one outbreak of herpes sores and then never have another; some people have a lot of very painful outbreaks the first year and then they diminish, and some people have regular outbreaks for the rest of their lives. Type 1 folks TEND to have fewer outbreaks but that is not an absolute rule. Herpes is pretty easy to spread (but can only be spread through direct contact; you don't need to worry about public restrooms, shared towels, shared glassware, and the like), and apparently, about 90% of the US adult population has oral herpes (but not me, go figure, though my mother definitely had it). About 25% of the US adult population has genital herpes, but the actual numbers are believed to be higher because many people don't get tested for the virus and think they've just had a " rash " or even a " yeast infection " . That's a large part of how it's spread too, " silent carriers " who don't realize they're infected and who don't practice safe contact/sex with friends and lovers (yes, you can give someone oral herpes by kissing them on the cheek if you have active sores!) I certainly can't diagnose you with oral herpes over the Internet (nobody can!) but I think it's a good idea to have it checked out, just in case. Feel free to reply with questions about any of this stuff if you want, and hang in there. I have tried eliminating various things from my diet as well as different vitamins and minerals, have seen both my doc and dentist--neither of whom have a clue. The latter prescribed an ointment I can use (inside my mouth -- yuck! but I use it) which provides some relief, but NOTHING seems to make the condition go away. It flares up, goes away on its own for very short periods, and then returns. I've done Google search after Google search, all my nutritional manuals, and Merck online. Guest guest
I get both the ones on the inside of the mouth and occasionally a whopper of one on my lip-always the left corner. I finally figured out why I was getting the inside of the mouth ones. Do you chew on pen caps or put other items in your mouth without thinking, like the car key as your juggling groceries? Or even chew on your fingernails without washing first? Once I became more self-conscious of what I was putting in my mouth, the inside of the mouth ones went away. I'm thinking the outside lip one may be the oral herpes. Happens about 3 or 4 times a year. I think mine flare up due to stress.
