OT - nail biting?

I'm just curious. My son is a nail-biter and has been for years. (We tried

everything to get him to stop.) I'm wondering if anyone else on here is also a

nail-biter and if there's any type of link. I remember doing an experiment in

elementary school where we scraped stuff out from under our fingernails and then

put it on a potato - all the potatoes rotted nicely. I know it's not quite that

simple, but wondering if there's a weird connection.

Thanks!

Liz

I bit my nails from about kindergarten until 7th or 8th grade. Also, when I was

younger, I used to dig in the dirt at lunch time. I can't imagine all the gross

things I ingested.

I've heard that one problem with children of today is that they DON'T dig in the dirt and they aren't getting the "natural" bugs from the dirt to build up their immune systems, therefore getting sick more often???

I did, Liz, off and on until I was... heck! 40something? Did

it for lots of reasons, as I saw it. Hangnails drive me crazy and I didn't have

a nail file w/ me... Just habit... Yeah, I DO think anxiety... and I notice

that the urge left after my very difficult husband chose " another path " ! One

weird thing I noticed is that I liked the taste and after I learned more about

fungi I DID wonder if there were an allergy addiction connection!

Your next question is what got me to quit. Mostly vanity. I just didn't want

ugly fingernails. Wish I had an easier answer.... but I DID discover, years

later, a tendency towards under the nail fungi... which brings me back to

wondering if they weren't always growing there but were just sub-clinical.
