Guest guest
Hey Kim, Let me check around for you. The NJ Transit train goes right into Penn Station in NY now. I don't know the subway system well enough especially up by Dr. H. We drive in from NJ. Have you also explored the option of staying in NJ and renting a car? This way you can do other things as well. The parking for Dr. H is the building across the street so you dont' have to worry about going up and down the stairs of the subway and carrying things at the same time. How has everyone been feeling? B and Kelli kimc wrote: We will be back to see Dr. H in the beginning of May, and I am already checking out hotel rates. For whatever reason, the hotel rates are more expensive at that time than when we went in January. I am contemplating flying into Newark, and staying in a hotel near there. I see decent rates for hotels in , NJ. Anyone familiar with this area? How long is the commute from this area to Manhattan? I know the NY subway system fairly well, but don't know anything about the public transportation system in NJ. I'd like to find out the easiest & least expensive way to get to Manhattan. Can anyone give me some advice on this? In January, I spent $40 for taxi fare from LaGuardia to Manhattan & a few dollars less back to the airport, which was higher than I remembered in the past. I am looking to trim travel costs, since we will be seeing Dr. H more frequently now. If you have any advice for me, can you please e-mail me directly, since I am not getting most of the emails from the listserve anymore. Guest guest
Hi , I don't think driving in NY is for me. I have gotten used to the subway system. I would be interested in finding out more about the train though - the cost, where to get it, etc. Right now my daughter has strep throat & she has barely eaten or drank anything since Monday. She is soooo irritable, not sleeping well, etc. I may end up taking her to the ER tonight, because she is also fighting me about taking medicine. I am scared they will admit her though & I can't take any more of this hospital stuff - it seems to be constant with us. Also, my husband & I are supposed to going away on Wednesday by ourselves for a much needed break. Every trip I have taken lately has been ruined due to someone being sick - UGH! Guest guest
Kim, In our experience January is by FAR the cheapest time to go to NYC. I have always wanted to see NY in the spring, but whew it's just so much more expensive! Remember that the rates at the Sinai guest residence are $165 yr round. When I talked to my friend who lived in Brooklyn she did not recommend commuting into the city. She said it simply wouldn't be worth the extra money, as the commute could be lengthy, especially if we weren't really familiar with the transportation systems. If you decide to commute, we'd love to know how that works out for you! When I searched for Mid May at www.sidestep.com <http://www.sidestep.com/> I found several hotels that seemed doable much closer for 125. Were you looking for something still cheaper?? If not, check out sidestep. I thought those rates were pretty good, since we usually try to get a room with a private bath, in Manhattan, near the hospital for about $100 in January. I'd love to know what you end up doing. Guest guest
Kim, I forgot to say that if you go to the ER, please keep me posted. You are not having any luck with hopsital stays this winter season huh? I hope that she's feeling better so that you can go away. B and Kelli kimc wrote: Hi , I don't think driving in NY is for me. Guest guest
Kim, If you stay in NJ you can take NJ Transit into Penn Station. From there, you catch the E train North (toward Queens) to 53st. At 53rd St, you change for the 6 train uptown to 96th Street. You need to walk 2 avenues and 1 street to Dr H's office (I take the 6 train there every visit). Guest guest
Judith, Thanks for the info! I have 2 more questions for you if you don't mind. I am very familiar with taking the E train to the 6 train in NY. What I am not familiar with is where to get the NJ transit. One of the hotels I am considering in NJ is in (near Newark Airport). Can you educate me on getting from there to Penn Station in NY? How long will it take to get to the city? How many transfers? How much will it cost? Is it worth it for me to stay in the area instead of NY city to save money, or do you think it will just be a hassle? Guest guest
Kim, From what I can tell, you can catch a train from Newark airport to Newark Penn and then Penn NY. My guess is that the entire trip will take 1 1/2 hours each way. NJ transit's website is http://www.njtransit.com/ you may want to look there. Their customer help line was down this morning. Based on my guesses, I would just stay in NYC, but then again, I will admit to being spoiled.
