The easiest way to pay is Health Insurance unless you have allot of

money. The total cost for my surgery was $55K and my Health

Insurance cover most except for braces. Good Luck on your search!

I'm in the same boat as the original poster. My

concern is, will insurance really cover the surgery.

My jaw is too big for my face and my bite is slightly

off, but wouldn't this be considered a cosmetic

procedure? How do I get insurance to cover it? Do some

companies cover it and not others?

Thanks!

Hi ,

Insurance does cover orthognathic surgery in most cases where it is

considered medically necessary. That can be due to a bite problem,

TMJ disorder, or other jaw deformity issues. I have an overbite,

but it is not a functional problem for me. I do have a deep bite

and underdeveloped jaw, and that does cause some functional

problems. SO insurance is covering mine even though I don't have a

traditional bite problem. SOme plans cover only if you have TMJ

problems, so will not cover you if you have TMJ problems, but only

if there are functional bite issues. SOme will cover only if it is

related to an accident. Some will cover even if for cosmetic

reasons (these are very rare). The point is, every single insurance

plan differs. And even within the same plan, some people are

approved and some are not, even with the same problems. There is

just no definitive standard. Sometimes people who do qualify with

their insurance end up paying out of pocket anyway. And sometimes

people squeek by even if their eligibility is questionable.

The best remedy, since braces usually come before the surgery, is to

get your insurance to preapprove you for surgery BEFORE you get your

braces. Even if they later deny you, the fact that you have a

preapproval in writing in hand gives you some clout to appeal the

later denial. But usually, once it is approved, it goes through

well with insurance covering the amount they determine is

appropriate. And that really varies among insurers too.

There isn't a standard in the US for coverage, nor definable

situations where a person who needs the surgery is covered even if

they have medical insurance. It is really a problem for people who

do not have any insurance at all. The process involves braces and

surgery, and be extremely expensive. If it is all out of pocket, it

can be a daunting financial prospect.

Does anyone reading this know if there are any residency programs in

any of the states that provide this surgery with a highly qualified

OMS supervising? I know Mt Saini in NY has a fabulous plastic

surgery residency program that does beautiful cosmetic work, and the

fees are amazingly low. Has anyone heard of similar programs where

MD's in residency specialization are honing their skills. It would

only be an option if it were supervised by a highly qualified OMS,

but it might be an option for some who are having to fund this with

limited funds and out of pocket. I haven't heard this discussed

here, but wondered if anyone here had some information about such a

program. Just a thought.

Oh, as to the cost of my procedures, I can only tell you what the

OMS fee and the braces are costing. I don't know the whole cost at

this point. The OMS fee is around $18000, and is covered by

insurance. My braces are $5800 (my insurance doesn't cover adults

over 19 for braces so this is all out of pocket). Most OD take a

down payment and then monthly fees for the braces for usually 18-24

months. I don't know if this helps you or not, but I hope it is

helpful to you.

Hugs,

Fran

My OS actually decided to submit a preapproval form before I began

to do anything and with no hassle the insurance approved. braces are

not cover by insurance but most Orthodontist have payment plans.

Mine was $4,900 with 29 monthly payments of $170. Surgery fee was

$20,000 Hospital Stay was $35,000 and Anesthesiologist fee was

$2,000 which was cover by my Insurance.
