Guest guest
I had lower jaw surgery. They split on the outside and the inside and cut through the bone and repositioned my jaw. My jaw was much longer on one side and pushed forward on one side more. They put in screws, 3 on each side, and he didn't end up having to wire or even band me. I saw my OS a couple of days ago to put on bands, but he said I was still swollen and that my bite was closing perfectly into the splint so he would leave the bands off for now. My surgery took over 6 hours, and I think maybe that is why I can barely open my teeth, I still feel so stiff. The talking has actually gotten worst the past couple of days, I think maybe because I have been weaned off the steriods. They keep telling me I can have soft foods, yah right, I can't get anything in there, my tongue is to big. Other than that I am pretty confident everything went great. I have got quite a bit of feeling back in my cheeks. Now the main numb area is my bottom lip and my entire chin and a little bit beyond that. I keep having tingling and cold spots, and every once in a while it feels like someone is pushing a finger tip into it. And I get so excited when it happens because I know it is a good sign. What have you been doing to pass your time? The past couple of days I have been on pretty much a normal sleep schedule, so I am getting pretty bored. My husband is still off work and taking care of our 3 kids, so I pretty much don't have to take care of myself at all. Good thing, I couldn't even if I wanted to try. Sorry I'm a big long- winded. Talk to you later. Connie
Guest guest
Hello Connie - How nice to hear that you made it to the other side. I'm having a BSSO (the surgery you had: mine is to set back my lower jaw)next summer for my underbite, along with a LeFort because I also have a case of Maxillary Hypoplasia (midface deficit). It sounds like you had an underbite too. You mentioned that your tongue is too big; my OMS told me to expect my tongue to be longer after the BSSO, because my mouth will be shortened with the surgery. So, that's why your tongue feels bigger, but your mouth is actually smaller. Weird huh? Just what us women need - a longer tongue. This whole tongue thing was the subject of a post of mine last week, but as far as I know no one responded to it. My OMS told me that I will be splinted and banded for four weeks, then he'll desplint me and I'll continue to wear the bands. He plans to send me back to my OD at the four-week mark, to get the surgical archwire and hooks off and to resume the ortho treatment, for up to six months. BTW, I just got my ceramic brackets on this Tuesday, get the spacers on next Tuesday, and the following Tuesday the spacers come out and the bands, archwires, and ligatures/o-rings get put in. So, I'm just at the beginning of my Orthognathic Journey; I'll be in braces for ten months pre-op. I hope the time flies right along and that my teeth move right along into their correct designated positions. Well, sorry for my longwindedness. Hope your recovery goes smoothly. Take care & I'll be sending some warm healing vibes your way! ~~ Diane > I had lower jaw surgery. They split on the outside and the inside > and cut through the bone and repositioned my jaw. Guest guest
Diane, Does this mean you've decided to have the upper surgery?! (Sorry if I missed it in previous conversation.) Luna
Guest guest
Luna - No, you haven't really missed much, just my continuous bouts of " Should I or Shouldn't I " concerning the LeFort. & Yes, I guess I'm going to let my beloved OMS, Dr. , " surgically separate my maxilla from my skull " - I MUST be a glutton for punishment, or maybe I'm tired of thinking about it as much as I am. I have an appointment with him on Wednesday - just another question & answer session, and I have plenty to ask. He told me three weeks ago that if I decided to only let him do the BSSO, he would do everything he could to persuade me to let him do the LeFort as well. Without the LeFort, my midface deficit will still be there, so I guess I need to have him do it so my face will be balanced. BTW, my ceramic brackets were installed Tuesday - the top ones feel just fine, but a few of the bottom ones have been digging into the inside of my lower lip. I've been using lots of wax. I go in on Tuesday to get my spacers put in. The following Tuesday the spacers come out and the rest of the hardware goes in (bands, archwires, and ligatures/o-rings). Looks like the " fun " for me is beginning; my OD says this is supposed to be " fun " - I say: " fun for who " , exactly?!? Thank you, Luna, for your continued support and for putting up with my whining! ~~ :^(_-) ~~ Diane > Diane, > > Does this mean you've decided to have the upper surgery?! Guest guest
Hi Connie! Sorry for the delay, my SIL stayed with us while she was in town. Wow, that's great! Hopefully eating goes better soon! I am getting tingles back in my numb areas too, although I have alot of feeling, more than I was expecting! How old are your kids? How long is your husband home? We don't have any kids (soon! getting this over with first...). My husband stayed home with me on Monday (I had been puking all weekend) and then for the rest of the week he worked mornings and came home for the afternoon (although truthfully I would have been fine alone, he was worried though). To pass my time I am watching tv and movies and knitting. I am a HUGE knitter, I knit all the time. I wasn't really up to it though until Tuesday (although I did knit a little in the hospital, mostly just to say I did). I am working on felting projects (where you chuck the wool item into the washer when you are done and shrink it, on purpose!) because then if I make mistakes you can't see them anymore. And I am making mistakes like crazy, even though I am able to knit I can't seem to follow my pattern worth anything. I'm blaming it on my meds. Cori > I had lower jaw surgery.
