Can anyone share their experience with Remicade? Hi ! Welcome to the group! My next options is/was also Remicade as of last week, but I just got the go-ahead to try LDN first to see if it works. Here are a few sites with info about LDN:LDN Sciencehttp://www.lowdosenaltrexone.org/ Cheers!Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Prednisone 10 mg 1x per day (trying to wean!!!!)

Welcome !!!

Your course of drugs sounds very similar to what I've been through. I have

Crohn's, but it acts like UC (except for 1 flare in 1992, all activity has been

in my colon). I too am on steriods and have had frequent transfusions. Asacol

was the first drug I tried- it was okay. Then came 6MP which I stayed on for

years even though it wasn't doing much. I am telling you all of this because it

was at this point when my doctors suggested Remicade. I had no other options (I

wish I knew about SCD 10 years ago!!!!!!) so I went with it. However, I had a

very good experience with it- I didn't have any side effects, and didn't get

sick from my immune system being down. It worked really well for me for about a

year and then, again, I continued with it for another 2 even though it wasn't

very effective. Everyone is so different it is hard for me to say that you

should or shouldn't do something. But, if your UC is really flaring, you may

need extra help beyond SCD to get things calmed down. The good thing is that you

can stop Remicade any time (not like steroids which are hard to taper off of).

It could be a good choice while you are starting SCD and as you feel better you

can decide to stop getting treatments.

Another drug I had a very good experience with was Cimzia. It is an injection

vs. an infusion. It also has potentially bad side effects, but I had immediate

positive results with it. In fact, the reason I failed on it was because I took

a broad spectrum antibiotic for another issue. Well, now that I am doing SCD I

know why- it totally messed up the ecology in my gut- the bad bacteria had a

crazy party and put me in hospital for week. If I could only go back in time...

As for a yogurt maker... if you can spend more money, everyone who has an

excalibur dehydrator seems to rave about it! (they run $100-200 depending on the

size you buy). Not only can you use to it dehydrate fruits, meat, etc. when you

are more advanced, but you can set the temperature and make yogurt in it. I have

a yogurmet (about $60)- but you need a dimmer switch and have to monitor the

temperature a bit with it (but I still love it).

I have the Excalibur 9-tray dehydrator and I love it. I can make a lot of yogurt

at once plus my own homemade spices. I love my dehydrator and would never go

back to a conventional yogurt maker. I got it and the Yogourmet starter at

www.lucyskitchen.com.

When I'm out of yogourmet starter, I uses Danon full fat plain yogurt with no

illegals (the lowfat and fat free versions have pectin).

Good luck!!!

a really bad cook and I'd rather have something easy than something that makes a

lot or is cheaper to make.
