Guest guest
YOu have to do the intro diet for five days then add a vegetable once every four days. There is a book onine that you can buy that tells you exactly how to do it by Jordon and Steve. I am new to this site and have several questions- My 14 year old son was diagnosed with UC last year. He tried several mesalamines which did not help him so he received remicade last week. He is also on 50 mgs of Prednisone which we are starting to wean him from. I am starting SCD this week for him. He had lost 15 lbs prior to the remicade because of a flare. The remicade worked for him almost immediately. His appetite is strong and he is putting weight back on. I want him to start the SCD so that we can help nutritionally heal his gut. When I start him on SCD at this point, can I give him whatever SCD legal foods he wants or do I need to do the phasing? Does he need to start with the intro diet? Can I modify the intro diet?
Guest guest
DO THE INTRO, DO THE INTRO, DO THE INTRO, lol They will all tell you that for the first 3 to 5 days to do the intro. After that.. introduce one new item at a time.. I use the stages as a general guide.. but by no means do I stick to it 100 percent.. Too many things that are in stage 5 that I was eating before I found the stages and had no problem with it.. exp.. watermelon.. catalope.. peas.... The almond flour is the only thing I had trouble with and found out that alot do.. I thought of it this way.. I never did almonds before.. Sure ate alot of pecans.. So I am trying ground up pecans now and not haveing any trouble yet.. It was something my system was used to...NO set rules.. everyones body responds differently To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Mon, August 16, 2010 9:56:13 PMSubject: starting SCD I am new to this site and have several questions- My 14 year old son was diagnosed with UC last year. You do need to start with an intro diet of some sort -- mine, as it happened, was not eating much of anything for four days while I was in the hospital with emergency gall bladder surgery. I really don't recommend this. But what I ended up going with was beef roast, pork roast, steamed zucchini, soft boiled eggs, butter and cheese. Elaine said that was fine -- the object of intro is to clear the decks with easy to digest foods. Then you can begin introducing foods gradually. I'd recommend sticking with the broiled or roasted meats initially. I frankly don't recommend the carrots, because I didn't tolerate them at all, but some people do. In what way were you thinking of modifying the intro diet? — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Actually, they have you jumping through quite a few more hoops than is actually necessary, but it's an interesting book. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Yes, you need to do the phasing. The meds are masking his symptoms. His guts need to heal properly for this diet to work. He may be able to introduce faster than some, but be careful since the meds are masking his symptoms, you might not know what he's reacting to. The slow and easy approach seems to work best in the long run. If his guts aren't healed when he comes off the meds, he'll have a relapse. I know, something very similar happened to me. >Does he need to start with the intro diet? Can I modify the intro diet? The intro diet can be anything you want. Just start slow for the first few days. Marilyn (group moderator) could not handle carrots and was recovering from gall bladder surgery when she started SCD. Her husband, who is not the wonderful cook she is, could make roast and that's what she ate along with french cut green beans and some other things. I'm sure she'll chime in. Everyone's intro can be different. I ate lots of chicken soup, homemade gelatin, and eggs at first. When I tried to add any veggies in, I would have symptoms. I wasn't on meds at the time (this was my second go round on the diet). I have continued to control my disease with the diet alone. I have had a few flares, but even on meds, people have flares. Now that I know what to do (go back intro and slowly intro foods back in), I control my symptoms. It took me a long time to start being able to tolerate foods. I didn't have much variety the first year on the diet but now I eat a good bit of stuff and as long as I don't overdo the things that cause my symptoms, I can eat pretty much what I want (in moderation). Good luck to you and your son. Hopefully Alyssa will chime in. She's a 16 year old girl who put herself on SCD and has stuck with it even when others didn't want her to. She's a testament to teenagers out there. She has UC too. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - Jan 2008
Guest guest
I used a modified Intro for mine. I never even considered yogurt because I hadn't been able to handle dairy for 27 years. So I did intro on roasted or boiled chicken, zucchini and carrots, applesauce and bananas. I knew these foods worked for me anyhow, so I just made sure I peeled and pureed the zucchini and (which I hate) cooked the carrots for a few days. It worked fine and I felt it was better than using Intro to test foods that I didn't think would work for awhile. It's a year now and I'm only getting about ready to try Intro.
