Guest guest
I have a question, yet again, about taking probiotics. I get a lot of die off with my probiotic and it lasts for a week or two even with the tiniest amount you could possibly imagine! For example, the most recent one was a little more than half a capsule, which I mixed into a cup of water, and only took an eighth of a teaspoon. I had two days of pretty intense sweating, nausea, weakness. Worsened loose stools and then today and yesterday constipation and a little painful mucusy greenish stools. Oh and a bit of heartburn as well. So basically, I had a couple ideas about how to make the die off less intense, and I'd like some feedback. 1) Change the time of day - I usually do it first thing in the morning with food. Maybe it needs to be later in the day. 2) Try it at a different point in my meal - maybe in the last third as opposed to the first 3) Don't have it with food at all - maybe a half an hour or so after the meal is completed 4) Leave it by the window for a half hour to decrease the probiotics intensity (I already did this once because I went from an old bottle to a new one - wow was that not fun!) I'm probably gonna try all of these, 4 first unless there's a good reason why I shouldn't. Or any other suggestions. Thank you! Oh and by the way, my six month-a-versary is coming up for being on SCD, which is pretty sweet. And over the past two months I gained 12+ pounds. I reached my goal of 90 a couple days ago. Guest guest
Ellen I have a tough time taking any supplement, but probiotics tends to cause a faster reaction than others. I have a routine I follow with any supplement, and it looks like you are heading in a similar direction. Much depends on the symptoms or type of reaction I’m dealing with, but basically I test things like the time of day, whether I need to take it after a meal, what brand, what type of delivery system, how often, how large the dose. When it comes to probiotics, it often makes a difference if you take it at the end of a meal. The time of day can also be a factor. The format of the probiotic and the brand can also matter – meaning yogurt vs. capsule vs. powder and what it is mixed in all make a difference. How often you take the probiotic also makes a difference, and the size of the dose. It doesn’t sound like you’re dealing with a direct immune response (hives, respiratory distress) but it still may help if you take the probiotic at the end of a meal, so it gets mixed in with the food. It is OK to just take the probiotic once a week, or once every 2 weeks, or once a month. That will always lessen the impact, or so I’ve found. It will still be effective even if it might take longer to rebuild the gut ecology. At least your body is tolerating it and there is less stress, so in the end it is more effective than trying to take it more often and going through strong reactions. What brand of probiotic are you using? There are several SCD-legal forms, so you might find another brand is better tolerated. Kim M. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I'm taking the Acidophilus from GI Prostart. I am definitely spacing the dosages out, but i could do it more. I am taking it by mixing the powder in an avocado-banana smoothie in the AM. Is that an OK food to mix it in? I guess I should just try to take it after the meal. I'll try that first before trying a new probiotic. Thanks, Ellen > What brand of probiotic are you using?
