Re: Time taken for pre-op braces?

I don't think there is an average because it depends on a lot of factors, like

how severe the malocclusion is, how fast or slow your teeth move with the

braces on, how compliant you are with the orthodontist's instructions and

rules (like no ice chewing, no gum, etc.). Everyone is unique and so

everyone's time in braces is unique too. If you have not had any work done

before like as a kid, I'd expect minimum one year before surgery.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I just wanted a rough idea what to expect so thank you. I meant

average in the literal sense, i.e. if a number of people say how

long they had their braces for pre-op I can see what is

the " average " time expected. Obviously, like you say, I realise it

depends very much on personal circumstances.

I get my braces in the first week of September and my orthodontist

has assured me that I will have my surgery by October next year (I

need it doing by then for various reasons)! I thought this seemed

quite quick which is why I'm curious. I was wondering if anyone

else's teeth were ready so quickly?

Thanks again,

,

When I had my braces put on in prep for the surgery I was told that I would have

them in for 12-18 months before the surgery but after having them in for 9

months my ortho and surgeon were happy taht I was ready for surgery and set a

date for a month afterwards, I had them in 10 months before my surgery.

In 2 weeks, it'll be 2 years in braces for me. No surgery scheduled yet. I

was told that I'd be out of braces in 2 years, 2.5 years tops, when I

started.

I had my lowers put on it Jan. 05, and my uppers put on in April 05.

They originally told me it'd be about a year, so I was looking at

around Jan or Feb 06 for surgery.

Last week I got the " six more weeks " notification, and have now

scheduled my surgery for Sept. 29th (05). That will put me at just

about 8 months, which was a really pleasant surprise for me.

Good luck with yours!

First thing to remember is that any estimate of orthodontia is a

guesstimate. Things can infamously move slower or more rapidly.

That said, my ortho was exactly on target. I had surgery at month 16,

then had the braces for another four, for a total of 20 months.

It also depends on what you need to have done, and how quickly or

slowly your teeth cooperate.
