Guest guest
Reah, Max has been on and off this drug for years now. But it has been used to treat his Tourette's, not his appetite. Others on this list use it for PDD and bipolar disorder. While one of the side effects IS an increase in appetite, it is not good medical practice to use it for that purpose. It is a strong drug and can have other side effects besides the appetite increase. One of them is not too bad - tiredness. The other is a mouth twitch that can start and never go away. While the risk is very, very small, it is not worth it just for stimulating the appetite. It scares us to have Max on this drug because of the risk of that tic since he has Tourette Syndrome already, but we had no other choice. Periactin is the drug you should try for an appetite increase. Jodi Z
Guest guest
My son is currently raking resperidal.....his appetite increased like crazy...he gained 10 pounds....this is a kid that only ate chicken nuggest from 's now he eats, Boston chicken, hot dogs, all kinds of pastas, pizza, fruits and veggies.....as far as the side effects, I do not have much information other than the doctors recommendation that is safe....I would like to follow up on what other parents think about the side effects as well. The Periactin did not work for us....he was on it for 5 years. Resperidal, side effects? Hi All, I was needing some information on this drug it seems wonderful as far as getting our children or anyone for that matter to eat. When I tried to look it up it looks like it hasn't been tested and cleared for children? Does anyone know the side effects of this drug and if any of them are long term? I believe one mother is currently tring this and that is even the only thing that brought it to my atten. Can she or anyone else help me with this? I would really love to try this first before I go to a g tube if the side effects aren'y ridiculus. Thanks to all with your help on this matter. In faith, Reah and Chloe:) __________________________________ Yahoo! Guest guest
Just to add to this... When started risperidal for his PDD, we pulled him off the periactin. The risperidal didn't even work for him as an appetite stimulant. He gained zero weight that 3 month cycle. Then we put him back on the periactin and he went back to gaining weight nicely. Guest guest
Reah, In my understanding, Risperidol should NEVER be prescribed for an RSS/SGA child to increase appetite. I would run for a new doctor. Risperidol is an antipsychotic medication that is wonderful for children with mood dysregulation issues, and I believe can also help with tics. However, there are some serious risks of some bad side effects. This drug can be a lifesaver for children with mood dysregulation or early possible bipolar. And yes, one of the common side effects is a rapid increase in weight, often 10 pounds, which usually slows and settles out. But again, I believe that this is NOT a medication to be used as an appetite stimulant by itself. Cyproheptadine is also NOT approved as an appetite stimulant; it is FDA approved as an antihistamine. That being said, the side effects of a short acting antihistamine being lethargy and crankiness are far better than the ones associated with Risperidol. I won't go into the side effects, as they can be scary. Suffice it to say if your child has been prescribed it for mood regulation, I am sure that the psychiatrist already went over that with you. Hope this helps. Make sure to talk about this with any physician if the physician is prescribing this med just as an appetite stimulant. > > Hi All, > I was needing some information on this drug it > seems wonderful as far as getting our children or > anyone for that matter to eat.
