Guest guest
Hi, I've been watching the boards for awhile and am curious about something. A friend of mine in her 40s had lower advancement surgery and was still experiencing lip and chin numbness a year later. She went to an acupuncturist and was able to get her sensation back. I'm contemplating having the lower advancement myself, so I'd like to know if anyone else has tried acupuncture for numbness, and if this worked for you. Guest guest
Hi Bree, I haven't tried acupuncture for numbness (I had MLD therapy for swelling, which I felt would reduce the risk of longer term numbness). But I did have Japanese acupuncture 2 weeks ago. I have lower back pain, and despite seeing a massage therapist and chiropractor for a number of years, they have not been able to solve this one problem for me (although they have been very helpful and successful in other areas). Anyway, I went to see this person (last resort, as I am needle phobic), and when I got off the table, I had no more back pain. It lasted quite awhile too, but it's worn off. It was chronic pain for me, so I don't expect one treatment to cure it, although I do know others who have gone to this particular person for one treatment only. It's not covered by health plans, unless performed by a physician. I think I'll ask my acupuncturist the next time I see him (which should be in the next week or so). > Hi, > > I've been watching the boards for awhile and am curious about > something. Guest guest
Hi Bree, I am now a little over 4 months post op and I still have a great deal of numbness on my lower lip and chin. It's as if I know im touching it but I can't really feel anything. Still have trouble putting a cup to my lip and usually have to keep wiping my chin when I eat as I have no clue when food dribbles out of my mouth. I started getting accupuncture for pain immediately after surgery (all distal points as there was no way anyone was touching my face). And now about 2 weeks ago I started accupuncture again for residual swelling and the numbness. I'm doing the accupuncture in conjunction with MLD massage and I find the combination of the two are helping a great deal with the numbness, however for me so far it's been a very temporary thing. I feel a noticeable diff. right after treatment and it slowly starts to subside after a day or so. However after paying as much as I have for the orthodontic work and surgery, I think the investment into the massage and accunpunture is well worth it. I'll keep you posted on how my numbness goes as my treatment progresses. I'm scheduled for 4-5 more accupuncture treatments.
