Guest guest
If I had to venture a guess, I would say it's from cross-contamination. Even if you are careful to order legal foods, they are probably still prepping & cooking the food in pans or griddles that have had contact with illegals. It's almost like you have to go back to the kitchen to supervise to be 100% sure- it sucks! I'm sorry your daughter was so sick Do you use Marilyn's card for eating out? I have used it and it's really helpful. It doesn't take care of cross-contamination, but it's a great resource. -Joanna > > Hi all > Does anyone else have issues dining out? When we are very careful to order just a plain piece of fish or burger (no bun) and steamed veggies. Yet, my daughter is sick with stomach cramps and then followed by the blood in stool. This has happened quite a few times. It took me a while to figure out that she only has blood on Mondays until we got better with the food diary. > > Last night she ordered a burger, cheddar cheese and steamed asparagus and was so sick i wondered if we were going to the ER. Guest guest
Burgers quite often have fillers and/or seasonings added which are illegal. Cheese that would go on a burger probably is pre-sliced and processed to prevent sticking to each other. Again illegal. I would stay away from these items and if you order fish, ask for it steamed or poached with no prep or rub. Higher end restaurants are a safer bet as they will try to accommodate you individually. Guest guest
Thanks for the heads-up. I did notice the higher end places did not disagree with her as much. However but at $200 tab for a family of 4, we don't visit very often She even reacted to a single piece of non scd bacon at a friends so now I have been sending her to sleepovers with her own bacon, cheese, muffins and everything so we have no issues. Since her doctor's is not totally convinced that it's food that is having her relapse so quickly so i want to do my best this much to take food out of the equation.... > > > Burgers quite often have fillers and/or seasonings added which are illegal. Needless to say I am done with dining out! One of the biggest issues with eating out is where you are eating out. I learned, for instance, that places like Texas Roadhouse have pre-prepared vegetable packets with their " seasoning " and " butter sauce " on it already. You cannot get plain vegetables. I thought they were plain vegetables because even when I specified " plain " to wait staff, they never mentioned that they were pre-prepared. It was only through charting that I determined that every time I ate at Texas Roadhouse, I had a problem. I now get a salad. I have complained to Texas Roadhouse about this. I don't know if they now have un-seasoned vegetables, but they did send me a gift certificate for two free meals! <g> You also have to make sure things like cheddar cheese are safe. For instance, is it really cheddar, and not American? If it's already shredded, it's not safe. Burger contents can be problematic -- I've learned that many places get their burgers pre-made, and they may have seasoning already in the meat, like Worcestershire sauce in it. I have a few places I can eat... but it can be hard. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Local is sometimes a better choice. All chains bother me and if I have problems once at any restaurant, I try to stick to the 'safe' places. Some places are on a permanent ban but it takes awhile to find the good and the bad. Guest guest
My son worked his way through The University as a waiter at The Olive Garden and he said that the amount of food that comes pre-prepared would astonish us. This, no doubt, goes for all the national chains. And pre-prepared = probably not legal. When I'm home, I have a few select local places where I eat. Now, a couple of them are beginning to develop other locations, so I suppose they could be considered chains, but they are LOCAL chains. When traveling, however, it's hard (especially if people don't use the map on this site to list their favorite local places!) to find places you're reasonably sure will work with you. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
I have heard an unsubstantiated rumor that In-and-Out burgers (they're primarily in Southern California) have legal burgers. Is anyone familiar with this?? > > Hi all > Does anyone else have issues dining out? When we are very careful to order just a plain piece of fish or burger (no bun) and steamed veggies. Guest guest
yep they are legal! I love In n out and eat there a lot. I have never had any problems. Also, Elevation Burger is on the East Coast and they also have legal burgers (protein style) that is grass fed beef. > > > > Hi all > > Does anyone else have issues dining out? Guest guest
I explain to the wait staff that the burger can ONLY have salt and pepper and the cheese has to be freshly sliced (otherwise they usually used shredded out of a bag). Actually, I have brought my own cheese many many times. It helps so much. Calling ahead not during busy hours and talking to the actual cook staff has saved me many times. Sometimes the wait staff just says what they think you want to hear. In a lot of places now, the steamed veggies come in microwavable bags and while they don't add anything to them, there are often additives. I found out about this at Zea's. I had a knowledgeable and helpful waiter that helped me. Good wait staff is invaluable. He got tipped 50% of the total bill for being so helpful. Guest guest
In-and-Out does a great job of making stuff from scratch. According to http://www.in-n-out.com/freshness.asp: " Our commitment to quality starts with our hamburgers. We make them from fresh, 100% pure beef. They are free of additives, fillers and preservatives of any kind. But the focus on quality starts well before we deliver our hamburger patties to our stores. We own and operate a world class patty making facility. Since we only serve burgers, fries and drinks, making a high quality hamburger patty is everything to us. We have always made every one of our hamburger patties ourselves using only whole chucks from premium cattle selected especially for In-N-Out Burger. We pay a premium to purchase fresh, high quality beef chucks. We individually inspect every single chuck we receive to make sure that it meets our standards. Then our highly skilled, in-house butchers remove the bones. We grind the meat ourselves and make it into patties ourselves. We do all of this in our facility on our property in Baldwin Park, Ca. These steps enable us to completely control the patty-making process and be absolutely certain of the quality and freshness of every patty we make. We've always made our hamburger patties this way.
