Guest guest
As far as the swelling, I think it depends on the type of surgery and the person. I had surgery for the palatal expander in October or 2003 and I swelled/bruised terribly. I just had the Lefort 1 Osteotomy and my swelling was VERY minimal almost not at all (you can see my pictures under Dee) and I never bruised. I am not complaining at all. I actually took several pictures and am putting together a scrapbook of my experience. My oral surgeon was amazed when I went for my first follow-up. I think they expected me to be more swollen than I was. Tell your daughter to keep up the good recovery. At least for me, the time has flown by. I get my splint removed on September 1 and then my surgical wires out on September 6. I get to eat as of that day!!!! > Hi all, > > My daughter as I have said before had a Lafort I Ostonomy on August 13th. They moved her upper jaw 4mm forward and widened her pallet and she has to wear the splint in her mouth for 6 weeks It was 1 week yesterday and already her swelling has gone down tremendously with very little bruising. Her cheeks are still puffy and her lips a bit. > > I am thrilled but must admit from reading posts on this site I rather expected worse. Is this about normal or is she just doing better than usual. > > I am finally getting food down her as she got the nerve to remove her bands to eat some mac-n-cheese that she swallowed without chewing. The smell from her nose has pretty much left since she realized the smell was coming from her sinuses and once she started using the saline spray very often that made a huge difference. > > She made a mistake last night though. A friend came over and didn't know the meaning of leave! So from 6 to 9 my DD talked to this girl and when she left my DD was in great pain. I had to give her pain medicine for the first time in days. > > Still all in all I am pleased. > > Anita > >
Guest guest
I'm so glad to hear your daughter is eating! The visit from her friend was probably good for her anyway. Hopefully she's made the connection between a lot of talking and pain. It's best to minimize it for the first few weeks. As I said in my previous post to , even after 5 weeks, my muscles got sore if I talked for too long. Her recovery doesn't sound extraordinary, it's just that you tend to hear more about the difficult recoveries here. Those who had easy recoveries (myself included) tend to feel a bit guilty about posting. Still, it must be quite encouraging for her at this point for things to start easing up. I ate mac 'n cheese too - you can slightly whiz it up in the blender or food processor to make it easier to swallow. She'll probably be allowed soft-chew foods in another week or so - check with the surgeon. > Hi all, > > My daughter as I have said before had a Lafort I Ostonomy on August 13th. Guest guest
I really don't think it's unusual. The thing you have to remember is that while people are going through the recovery, at least immediately post-op, it can be frightening and frustrating. And people are more likely, I think, to post when they're in distress, and to post more often when they're seeking help, than they are once they're past the panic points and everything is going well. Not to say that some folks don't have a rough ride, if you can wade through all those negatives. But many people -- most, I think, -- do not... Hallelujah! And I really do believe, as well, that most hospital personnel and physicians are eager to help those in distress. I know my own doc persisted for months in trying to help one of his young patients deal with a problem which eventually turned out to be something that she had created, in an unfortunate attempt to get more attention. But I rejoice with you that things do go so well for your daughter. And yes, talking too much too soon can make the mouth swell and make everything more unpleasant. Do urge her to try to follow her doc's instructions about what to do and how much. best, Cammie > Hi all, > > My daughter as I have said before had a Lafort I Ostonomy on August 13th.
