Guest guest
Steve The term “flavouring solutions” is a term found on many meat package labels – other types of commercially-produced foods as well. This term immediately raises red flags, because one of the flavors added is usually sugar in a form we shouldn’t have while on SCD 100%. It can also include some flavor enhancers such as MSG or seasoned salts, and who knows what else. These are what we refer to as “hidden illegals”. While you may not notice your body reacting to the meat after one meal, over the long-term we often realize something is going on, either through increased symptoms or a delay in healing. When you purchase meat, look for a package label that only says “retained water” or doesn’t have any mention of the words “enhanced, ” “flavouring solution, ” “natural flavors added”. If you purchase your meats from a butcher or other local supplier, ask a lot of questions to make sure nothing was added to the meats during processing. Interesting you should mention feeling normal at 11 pm. I do also, between 10 pm and 2 am. It is a wonderful feeling – nausea is usually minimal to non-existent, no abdominal pain. Of course, between 2 and 4 am everything goes downhill, but at least I can enjoy those few hours a day, and fall asleep without any trouble. I know what is causing this for me – it is all connected to having upper GI malfunctions, involving the stomach, Sphincter of Oddi and biliary tree (liver, gallbladder). The reason for this, in me at any rate, is because by 10 or 11 pm the stomach has completely emptied (assuming you’ve stopped eating at 8 pm or sooner), bile isn’t being requested from the gallbladder (or liver if you no longer have a gallbladder), and the chyme/food has moved further into the duodenum (small intestine). So the upper GI begins to calm down. If you’re lucky and don’t have a malfunctioning biliary tree, this feeling can last many hours, until you eat again. In my case, at 3 am the upper GI “resets” itself – that is how my gastroenterologist phrased it – which is a normal process after so many hours of not eating. In my case this means the process triggers nausea, upper right abdominal pain, migraines on some days; and in my case, occasionally zap my vagus nerve which triggers chills, drop in body temperature, dizziness, which can often trigger a surge in adrenalin levels giving me an extreme anxiety/panic and claustrophobia attack…. Very weird at 3 am, believe me! Now I keep a night light on, and have a television and DVD player nearby so I can get through these episodes. Good thing I am alone in my bedroom [grin]. And although it sounds dramatic, I’ve improved considerably since being on SCD. Not sure if the anti-anxiety med I take (Xanax) once every 10 days has also helped stabilize my nervous system, or my digestion has stabilized enough so it isn’t stressed, or both. Usually the 3 am symptoms are mild; enough to wake me up and keep me awake for an hour or two, but not overwhelming. So, sounds like you also are dealing with biliary tree issues. Oh, and another thing my gastroenterologist told me is that some people develop an oversensitive digestion, so that normal digestive functions trigger pain. For example, normal peristalsis can trigger painful cramps. I know my upper GI is particularly sensitive now that it is malfunctioning, and even normal peristalsis in my lower GI triggers pain and chills. I’ve learned, through experience, what pain location and pain level to ignore, since it is now “normal” for me, and at what point I need to head for my gastroenterologist. Kim M. Kim, what are " flavouring solutions " please? I don't add any spices to any of my food. Btw, you really are an amazing lady to put up with all of your symptoms yet help so many others with your diligent work. …. I only eat small amounts at a time. One thing I should say is that eating for me is a nightmare as apart from the nausea and discomfort I never feel hungry except at 11pm. This is the only time of the day that I feel hungry and the only time of the day that I feel almost normal. This seems weird to me but I can't help but wonder whether this holds the key to my illness because this happens every day and it seems there is some sort of body clock going on here so I am trying to find out what the body does at this time of day, any ideas anyone?
