Guest guest
The spacers can cause some pain. That is normal, just mention to your OD that they have caused you some pain so that he is aware of it and can get a sense for your pain threshold/and sensitivities- he can't accomodate you if he isn't aware of what is going on. Sometimes, my ortho planned one thing, but after mentioning that something was bothering me, he'd modify his plan, or if I mentioned that I was completely fine with some other adjustment, he'd modify the otherway and be a little bit more agressive. Use your voice! Knowing that you had pain, he might start you out more gently with your initial ortho work just to ease you into it. There is no way for him to avoid possibly causing you some more pain and discomfort when they are put on initially. The braces just do hurt and your mouth and teeth are tender for a little while. Take some aleve or advil, and give it a few days of treating your mouth with TLC and you'll start to feel better and adjust. Your mouth just has to get used to it. Don't worry! The pain won't last for ever... and I like to say, the sooner they're on, the sooner they'll be off again.... You'll do great! Guest guest
I didn't have spacers this time around, but I did as a kid and remembered them being the most painful part of my first experience with braces. Everyone is different, but I have heard many people agree that the spacers are more painful than the braces themselves. But fair warning; though I didn't have spacers this time, I've had issues with my wisdom teeth being very crooked, and the brackets and wires back there really have hurt the inside of my cheek. I didn't have wisdom teeth the first time around, so it wasn't an issue then. It's a different kind of hurt than the spacers, but unfortunately it hasn't been a painless process. I just keep thinking that before I'm 30, this will all be a memory and I'll (hopefully!) be feeling great and looking great. ~
Guest guest
I've had braces for 6 months and now that I'm closer to my surgery the OD decided to take off my braces on the back teeth and replace with bands. For strength he said.... So, I just went through this about two weeks ago. It was torture. I wanted to take them out soooo bad. I woke up each morning in a lot of pain. My bottom right was so tight they had a really hard time getting the bands on. This is by far the worst of braces so far. After I got my bands my teeth started to feel better right away. Oragel helps and advil. Good luck, sounds like you are close to your appt. Beth > So I got the spacers put in last week, and have been in pain ever > since. Guest guest
I've heard that the spacers are the most painful part of this whole procedure. Luckily I didn't need any. Enjoy your mushy food - it will prepare you for post-op recovery! > So I got the spacers put in last week, and have been in pain ever > since. I can't eat anything bc it just hurts too much. Guest guest
Be of better cheer... For many folks, the spacers are the most painful part of the whole procedure. Perhaps because you're not used to dealing with the soreness, and you sort of get accustomed to it. The human body is amazing in many ways, not the least of which is the extent to which our mouths can accommodate to and put up with manipulations of many sorts. Without even a lot of protests! Guest guest
And do remember to take an ibuprofen or Alleve or whatever your over- the-counter painkiller of choice is, BEFORE your ortho appointments. It's easier not to let the pain get started than it is to catch up with it. Cammie > So I got the spacers put in last week, and have been in pain ever > since. Guest guest
As others have said, the spacers are truly the worst part. After a few of the tightenings with the braces, I was sore for a day or two - but nothing bad. Keep wax on hand after tightenings. It's amazing how the slightest movement can start the toughening of the cheeks all over again. I had spacers put in about three months after my braces and they didn't hurt as much as pre-braces. It could of been that the teeth weren't as close to each other. Besides hurting and my teeth feeling loose, it drove me absolutely crazy to feel like I had something stuck in my teeth. Thus, it was a long week. Good luck! Guest guest
Sam - The braces are alot easier to handle pain-wise than the spacers. I was fortunate in that my OD put the brackets on two weeks before the rest of the hardware so I had some time to get used to having stuff in my mouth. Would your OD be willing to put your stuff on in stages? Wax really helps in the beginning - I don't use it anymore because my mouth is used to my braces now. Also, take Naproxen or other painkiller before you go to the OD. Don't worry - you will be fine! Your OD is a pro and knows how to do this with care and gentleness. Take care. ~~~ Diane (Braces on for the last five weeks) > So I got the spacers put in last week, and have been in pain ever > since. I can't eat anything bc it just hurts too much. Guest guest
-Beth - Sorry to hear that the bands are so painful. How close to your surgery are you? What do you have and what are you having done? I've had my braces on for five weeks now and my teeth have been moving like crazy! My OD says I will be in braces up to ten months prior to surgery and up to six months after. My OD only put bands on the first molars and says he will put the bands on the second molars sometime possibly this winter. He says they are needed for the surgery - have little hooks on them. BTW, I have an underbite and will be having a BSSO for mandibular set-back and a probable LeFort to advance my maxilla and drop it down 2 mm in front. I say " probable " because my Surgeon isn't sure if it is warranted yet. I go back to my OMS in Dec. for more xrays (cephalometric and panoramic) - he says he will see how much my teeth have moved and how aligned they are in the arches, and hopefully will be able to tell if he needs to do the LeFort. I'm tired of all this being up in the air; I just need to know what I have to " look forward to " next summer. ~~ Diane (Idaho) :-)#)-- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " Beth " <books95076@h...> wrote: > I've had braces for 6 months and now that I'm closer to my surgery the > OD decided to take off my braces on the back teeth and replace with > bands. Guest guest
Hi Diane, I'm having my lower jaw brought foward and two procedures on my upper jaw (although I don't know the medical terms) I have a pretty big open bite. I was told he's going to widen my upper jaw and close the open bite. My teeth too have been moving like crazy. I now find it even more difficult to eat, some how when my teeth wheren't aligned it seems easier to chew on my four teeth that touch. I was told 12 month's in braces and it's looking more like 9-10months. So I guess that's good. Beth > -Beth - Sorry to hear that the bands are so painful. How close to > your surgery are you?
