I am another one of those bird and mold women but I don't have birds. A few years back I had to have a new roof put on. When they took the old one down it was so rotten that you could see dust containing mold and who knows what falling down into my house. I live in an older mobile and the beams where the two pieces of the house are put together form an open space clear across the house. Birds had been nesting in there until it was full. I hope that they cleaned it out but I'm not sure. So I have PF caused from Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis or as Joyce calls it birds, and in my case mold too. I really have to get this place sold. He put me on Cell Cept so that looks like it could put me in the do-nut hole pretty fast. He told me to see a Rheumitologist about my pain. I guess I was lucky. He only took 8 vials of blood. I have another appointment in April. They didn't send him the results of my Echocardiogram so he wants me to see my cardiologist. I'm do to see him anyhow. He is suppose to be sending a printout with the results of what he found to the doctors and to me. We should get them in a couple of weeks. He also talked me into taking 5mg of Prednisone a day. He wanted 10 but I refused. went with me and we visited while I was doing a lot of waiting. She probably remembers more that I do. I was so exhausted that I slept for hours yesterday with my computer online on my lap. Bob is sick. I think it was too much for him too but he wouldn't like to admit that. The last job I had we moved into another store, and immediately I knew and could smell mold I worked there in that building I think for about 10 months and I was kinda sick all the time. Before I left I went in the basement and did some searching and guess what I found. You are right lots of BLACK MOLD, I think this is what started it all I may be wrong but I think so. Guest guest
Would be interested in the answer on this as I worked in a job for a year and the mold and mildew you could smell was very strong. I was told that the air had be tested too as it's a place where children go after school for 3 hours. This too is where my situation got worse. To: Breathe-Support Sent: Sun, January 3, 2010 2:02:54 PMSubject: Re: My appointment at the UWMC I kept asking my pulmo guy if I could have gotten this from mold and he has said that I have IPF and that isn't from mold. Guest guest
Mold, fungus, et al, may cause fibrosis. Technically if we knew the cause it would no longer be IPF, but its fibrosis just the same. For any doctor to ever state what didn't cause it is absurd when by definition we don't know what the cause of IPF is. As to some of the environmental causes of Interstitial Lung Diseases, here is what Mayo says: Occupational and environmental factors. Long-term exposure to a number of toxins or pollutants can lead to serious lung damage. Workers who routinely inhale silica dust, asbestos fibers or hard metal dust are especially at risk of serious lung disease. So are people exposed to certain chemical fumes and ammonia or chlorine gases. But chronic exposure to a wide range of substances, many of them organic, also can damage your lungs. Among these are grain, sugar cane, and dust from bird and animal droppings. Other substances, such as moldy hay, can be a problem when they cause a hypersensitivity reaction in the lungs (hypersensitivity pneumonitis). Even bacterial or fungal overgrowth in poorly maintained humidifiers and hot tubs can cause lung damage. > >>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>From: Verizon Email bofus6 (AT) verizon (DOT) net>> >>>>>>>>>Subject: Re: Re Patti> >>>>>>>>>To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com> >>>>>>>>>Date: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 1:04 PM> >>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>We are so lucky to be near a teaching hospital.. Guest guest
,Either doctors are just down right idiots or maybe it's me. Idiopathic means unknown cause, and there are many causes one of which is environmental. I think that would include mold in the building where you worked. They told me my Pulmonary Fibrosis is Idiopathic also, but they think it was caused by a bad viral pneumonia that I had 14 years ago. At that time I was working in a court house, and they were remodeling the offices across the hall from my office. Part of that remodeling was removing asbestos. I had pneumonia 3 times during that year, and that's when my problems all started. I was diagnosed with IPF 4 years ago. I would bet that you are right - your IPF was caused from the mold. Not that it matters now. It is what it is.PatTo: Breathe-Support Sent: Sun, January 3, 2010 1:02:54 PMSubject: Re: My appointment at the UWMC I kept asking my pulmo guy if I could have gotten this from mold and he has said that I have IPF and that isn't from mold. Guest guest
I was in both the financial area and operations areas for mostly large manufacturers. I did a bit of everything over the years. When you're old enough you've had lots of experience....lol As to living to be 80, I guess we all had dreams of different types and different times in our lives. But, even healthy, often those were just dreams and the reality didn't necessarily follow path. I look back and think what if 80 had remained in my future. Well, let's see....maybe I would have kept working 65 hours a week until I was 70 at which time I finally would have retired and then been hit by assorted issues that made it impossible to do all those things I imagined at that point. Often in my dreams I would think back to the past. Oh, I loved the years on the lake, swimming, skiing. Oh, guess at 70 I wouldn't have been able to go back and ski twenty and thirty miles non stop. I take away my PF and think what if I made it to 70 (I'm 60 now). Ok, hearing would be worse, vision might well prevent enjoying many things, maybe even driving and travel. I know my kidneys would have been issues by then so probably dialysis if they hadn't failed completely. Maybe hip replacement? What about prostate cancer by then? And what about the toil of those continued years of ridiculous hours and stress on the job? Maybe I'll still make it to 70. I don't know. But I do know about 60. I know I'm able to enjoy family and friends. I know I'm living a life of moderate stress and pressure. (Not nearly the income I had for sure but a whole lot simpler). I don't have to get up at 5 AM and head to the office by 6 to get there at 7 and get home at 8:30 at night after the hour and half drive home. I don't fly around the world, all on business while enjoying none of it. But, I can drive to see relatives or meet friends and enjoy it. I took my first extended vacation of my adult life to visit family last year-17 days and 3700 miles. Furthermore, I wasn't in contact with the office by phone or computer. So, it's not what I dreamed of but it can be better than the reality likely would have been. Here's the question. Had you lived without the disease to 80, how many years between 50 and 80 would you have really lived, enjoyed to their fullest, made the most of, cherished as special? How many would you have just walked through and taken for granted? The answers are different for all of us. But, what we do all control, whether we admit it or not, is how much we live today and what we make of whatever time we have. I can't relate to it happening at 50. I was 56 when diagnosed. But, I can relate to doing all the legal work prior to my VATS so my death was planned and other things taken care of. I can relate to reading while waiting for a doctor's appointment at UTSW that the mean life for UIP/IPF was 3.2 years. (I guess I'm technically deceased now but am just too dumb to realize it or else the person responsible forgot to tell me). You say why you with PF? Good question. Why don't you have ALS? Why not Alzheimer's? Why not brain cancer? Why not you in your young 20's like Lanie? Why not you in an auto accident last night or last week? As to why you, guess since we don't even know the cause that's hard to figure out, isn't it? I think sometimes I'm glad I don't know. If mine is second hand smoke, then I should be angry at my parents. If it's one of the other dozen possibilities, then there is someone else for me to be angry at. Figure it out in my autopsy and help someone in the future but don't torture me. I don't know. So many mind games we can play but isn't there on all of life? What if I'd made a different choice on jobs when I was 25 or 30? Oh I might be wealthy and healthy? Or it could have led me to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and shot in a random shooting? Who knows. So, all I know is I'm going to make the most of what I have. I'm going to go to Duke in early February and see if anything else can be learned but I'll also visit family and friends in NC and enjoy the drive and maybe a few other things as I might along the way. Then after that, who knows what next. Should be a spring gathering of this group planned by then. Oh and I have a long time friend to plan something with, maybe in Florida, maybe California, maybe NC. I don't know but this will make the third time I've lived the last year of my life. Yes, I plan as if there won't be another. It worked for 2008 and 2009. Now, we'll see about 2010. Not worrying about 2011 and beyond yet. Still got 10 years worth of life to put into 2010. > > >>>>>>>> > > >>>>>>>> > > >>>>>>>>>From: Verizon Email bofus6 (AT) verizon (DOT) net> > > >>>>>>>>>Subject: Re: Re Patti > > >>>>>>>>>To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > >>>>>>>>>Date: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 1:04 PM > > >>>>>>>>> > > >>>>>>>>> > > >>>>>>>>> > > >>>>>>>>>We are so lucky to be near a teaching hospital.. Guest guest
As always, very, very well written. Thank You. Carroll IPF 3/09I was in both the financial area and operations areas for mostly largemanufacturers. I did a bit of everything over the years. When you're oldenough you've had lots of experience....lolAs to living to be 80, I guess we all had dreams of different types anddifferent times in our lives. But, even healthy, often those were justdreams and the reality didn't necessarily follow path. I look back andthink what if 80 had remained in my future. Well, let's see....maybe Iwould have kept working 65 hours a week until I was 70 at which time Ifinally would have retired and then been hit by assorted issues thatmade it impossible to do all those things I imagined at that point.Often in my dreams I would think back to the past. Oh, I loved the yearson the lake, swimming, skiing. Oh, guess at 70 I wouldn't have been ableto go back and ski twenty and thirty miles non stop.I take away my PF and think what if I made it to 70 (I'm 60 now). Ok,hearing would be worse, vision might well prevent enjoying many things, maybe even driving and travel. I know my kidneys would have been issuesby then so probably dialysis if they hadn't failed completely. Maybe hipreplacement? What about prostate cancer by then? And what about the toilof those continued years of ridiculous hours and stress on the job?Maybe I'll still make it to 70. I don't know. But I do know about 60. Iknow I'm able to enjoy family and friends. I know I'm living a life ofmoderate stress and pressure. (Not nearly the income I had for sure buta whole lot simpler). I don't have to get up at 5 AM and head to theoffice by 6 to get there at 7 and get home at 8:30 at night after thehour and half drive home. I don't fly around the world, all on businesswhile enjoying none of it. But, I can drive to see relatives or meetfriends and enjoy it. I took my first extended vacation of my adult lifeto visit family last year-17 days and 3700 miles. Furthermore, I wasn'tin contact with the office by phone or computer. So, it's not what I dreamed of but it can be better than the realitylikely would have been. Here's the question. Had you lived without thedisease to 80, how many years between 50 and 80 would you have reallylived, enjoyed to their fullest, made the most of, cherished as special? How many would you have just walked through and taken for granted? Theanswers are different for all of us. But, what we do all control, whether we admit it or not, is how much we live today and what we makeof whatever time we have.I can't relate to it happening at 50. I was 56 when diagnosed. But, Ican relate to doing all the legal work prior to my VATS so my death wasplanned and other things taken care of. I can relate to reading whilewaiting for a doctor's appointment at UTSW that the mean life forUIP/IPF was 3.2 years. (I guess I'm technically deceased now but am justtoo dumb to realize it or else the person responsible forgot to tellme). You say why you with PF? Good question. Why don't you have ALS? Why notAlzheimer's? Why not brain cancer? Why not you in your young 20's likeLanie? Why not you in an auto accident last night or last week? As towhy you, guess since we don't even know the cause that's hard to figureout, isn't it? I think sometimes I'm glad I don't know. If mine issecond hand smoke, then I should be angry at my parents. If it's one ofthe other dozen possibilities, then there is someone else for me to beangry at. Figure it out in my autopsy and help someone in the future butdon't torture me. I don't know. So many mind games we can play but isn'tthere on all of life? What if I'd made a different choice on jobs when Iwas 25 or 30? Oh I might be wealthy and healthy? Or it could have led meto be in the wrong place at the wrong time and shot in a randomshooting? Who knows. So, all I know is I'm going to make the most of what I have. I'm goingto go to Duke in early February and see if anything else can be learnedbut I'll also visit family and friends in NC and enjoy the drive andmaybe a few other things as I might along the way. Then after that, whoknows what next. Should be a spring gathering of this group planned bythen. Oh and I have a long time friend to plan something with, maybe inFlorida, maybe California, maybe NC. I don't know but this will make thethird time I've lived the last year of my life. Yes, I plan as if therewon't be another. It worked for 2008 and 2009. Now, we'll see about2010. Not worrying about 2011 and beyond yet. Still got 10 years worthof life to put into 2010.> > >>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>From: Verizon Email bofus6 (AT) verizon (DOT) net>> > >>>>>>>>>Subject: Re: Re Patti> > >>>>>>>>>To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com> > >>>>>>>>>Date: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 1:04 PM> > >>>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>>>We are so lucky to be near a teaching hospital.. Guest guest
I just started taking Cellcept. 500mg twice a day for 15 days then 1000mg twice a day. They didn't have a pamphlet with the side effects on it so if anyone has one they can scan to me I would really appreciate it. Guest guest
Bruce,Thank you for the chuckle. So you've been dead for a while, huh? This was much needed, as tonight is the last night in our house of 22 years. But, on the other hand, a new adventure is beginning, and maybe, just maybe, it will be a better one.Kathy ILD?hypersensitivity pneumonitis 3/08 Type 2 diabetes forever agoSubject: Re: My appointment at the UWMCTo: Breathe-Support Date: Sunday, January 3, 2010, 2:33 PM I was in both the financial area and operations areas for mostly large manufacturers. I did a bit of everything over the years. When you're old enough you've had lots of experience.. ..lol As to living to be 80, I guess we all had dreams of different types and different times in our lives. Guest guest
Bruce, Once again your words have been so inspiring, I think I'm going to frame them & place them on my refrigerator or mirror where I'll see them every day. If you make it to Calif, I sure hope you'll look me up so I can thank you in person.
